Anybody know much about old funiture?

LHF68 and I are thinking about selling our dining room set and getting something a little more our style-- Our Dining room set was my grandmother's and got passed along to me when she passed away, which was great at the time, but now that we're beyond our "hand me down college funiture" phase...

If you know something about furniture, and care, read on. If not, let us know if you know of any good ways to get good estimates on furniture or good consignment stores in austin.

Anyway, at the time that I got the dining room set, my aunt, who has since passed as well, mentioned that someone in east Texas where they lived offered to buy the chairs from her for 200 a piece. The set has 5 chairs and one armchair, a china cabinet and a buffet, and the table matches but is not original, as the orininal table broke at some point in the 70's during christmas dinner. The pattern is called "Duncan Fife". It would have been purchased sometime in the 1930's , (I think) with the exception of the table. All of the furniture needs to be refinished, and three or four of the chairs are broken but fixable.

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks

I wouldn't exactly call inheritied furniture that might be an antique hand me down college furniture. However it is not for everyone. Are you looking to fix it for use or are you looking to sell it? Either way if the furniture is from the 30s or prior you might go to an antique dealer and talk to them. You might be able to get more money if it is all in good shape but there are many people out there looking for this stuff to fix up and either turn a profit or use in their own houses.

Yeah, try antique consignment stores. I'm about to foray into that arena as well with an embroidered chair from the 20s that my great-grandmother made. Let me know how it goes.

wsell, to me it's hand me downs I guess. I like it becuase of it's sentimental, but it just doesn't fit in. Everything we have is light and colorful, but in the middle of it all is this old antique dark wood set.... I just don't want to go to some *** who will screw me, would like to know I'm talking to someone who knows their stuff.

I worked around about 3 million dollars worth of antique furniture at the Governor's Mansion.
The Duncan Phyfe stuff was the best.Very classic and elegant.
Post some digital pics if you have any.

If you can post pics of the hutch and buffet, I know a buyer. Me. Or e-mail them to [email protected].

I have been looking for a Duncan/Phyfe 'Rose' or 'Rosewood' hutch and buffet for several years, ever since my grandmother died and I got the table and chairs. To know if yours is the same pattern: The chairs have a carved flower, with 3 leaves on each side and a backward "S" in the center of the flower.
