Any nice areas around ST. Edwards

My sister is moving up here to attend St. Eds. I'd like her to get a newer apt, but I doubt that will happen for under 600. For me, I can live in a run down place, but not her.

I used to be a locator myself, so I think I know the answer to the question. I think I would want her to live in Far WEst. Still an easy drive to St. Eds and it's a decent area. Prices are pretty good as well.

Anyone attend St. Eds? What's the parking situation and is there a shuttle?

Yeah, Travis Heights is a nice area around St. Edward's.

Not sure that you're going to find anything around $600 most places in Austin. Good luck.

Far West is kind of a hike to St. Edward's but if you consider that close, ok.

The #1 CapMetro bus runs down Congress.

far west is wayyyyyyyy too far from st eds. Hell, far west isnt even that close to UT.

South Congress has a pretty good amount of apartments for $500-700, and that is really close to St Eds. Check on craigslist

It's just those around that area seem old or dilapidated. Far West is up there, but she's willing to do a 20 minute commute.

There's no shuttle. The #1L/1M and the #328 pass by campus. If you really wanted to live in Far West, you could take the UT shuttle from there to UT, then take whatever shuttle from UT comes down to Paker Ln, then walk 1/2 mile to campus.

Woodwillow is pretty well received, and is right across Woodward from campus. Blunn Creek apartments are about 2 years old, but I think they cater to those on housing assistance, and may not be the most enjoyable experience.
Some of the apartments on Parker Ln can be OK. This whole part of town was built out 30 years ago, so there's not much new in the area. Those SoCo lofts should be open soon.

Is she doing undergrad at SEU? As a freshman, she's required to live on campus. If not a freshman, she should've applied for the on-campus apartments. Those are very nice, but very popular. Space still tends to open up after the semester starts, but that's no good if she has a lease...

Oh, parking:

There's plenty of spaces and they're building a garage. The problem is that after about 8:30, most of the open spaces are in the parking lots that are a 5 or 10 minute walk from the middle of campus. For the poor students here who never parked at DKR or DFF to walk to an 8am class at Burdine, this is some sort of outrageous hardship, so they wait for 20 minutes in the parking lot right outside of the building their class is in and hope they can grab a space when someone leaves, then ***** about how it took a half hour to find parking.
At least the students no longer drive from the dorms/apartments to the classroom buildings anymore.

there are a few nice apartment complexes off of stassney that arent too far away. im not sure if you could find anything under 600. i lived at the regency apartments, they were nice but the location sucked.

far west is WAY too far away.

Yeah, there's perfectly nice places that are less than 5 years old in the Congress / Stassney / Little Texas area. Brand new apartments along Slaughter around Congress/ S 1st / Manchaca may meet your price range. It only takes me 10-12 minutes to get to campus from there, too.

Yeah, and the thing is, I want her to live in an area with younger people, so slaughter, stassney, I don't know. May just tell mom to bite the bullet and have her live at Statehouse.

oh, how about that place behind metro theater? Nice place, but not really neighborhoody, but could be compromise.

Stassney has a lot of fairly young people living in that area -- students and recent graduates. I don't know about the places on Slaughter.

That place behind the Metropolitan movie theater is one of the ones in the area I'm thinking of.

Seriously though, she should have tried to get one of the on campus apartments, or the fancy new dorms. Have her get on the wait list and live with you until the space opens up (assuming you're still in Austin).

There are a couple decent places on or just off S.Congress. 2020 apartments aren't bad. I'm buying a place in Travis Oaks, which is right at congress and oltorf. They are condos but I know there are some they are renting out. The way to go is the on campus apartments, but like misha said, they're pretty popular.

Ram,
I live at place near S. Congress/Stassney/WC/35. I would say the majority of people in the complex are college-aged, as evidenced by the packed pool. If you're interested, PM me & if she moves in, we both make $200 off referral.

I used to live at South Oaks between IH-35 and Parker a few years back. Even then a one bedroom was going for ~$700 or more. Not sure what they go for nowadays. As someone else stated, it's a 1/2 mile or so away. However, I would think a freshman would feel cutoff from St Eds since it is on the other side of IH-35. I didn't care at the time because I was in grad school and later starting a new job (fortunately, just down Oltorf a couple of miles).

As for the area around there, it's kind of a mix. I never felt unsafe, but my then girlfriend, now wife, never cared for the area. I agree with the other posters who suggest seeing if they have on-campus housing near there.

As for Slaughter, that is definitely a haul from there. My first house was off Slaughter, and I cannot imagine many students live down there in apartments. I always assumed that mostly younger couples/ families lived in the apartments. Definite a lot more students off Parker/ Woodward.

I would find a Realtor and/or look in the paper. I just bought my 2 bedroom condo at S. 1st and Barton Springs and I was paying $650 a month for it before that (and they sold me the place for 40k less than market, so there are some crazy landlords out there). It was a steal, but the 1 bedrooms here are going for 600 and under. There are lots of condos around this area that one could probably find a good deal on.

Ram, they usually have move-in specials in the summer, we got in on a $750 for 735 sf special last july. It's a little pricey, but they're nearly brand new, wood floors in the kitchen/bathroom, stainless steel appliances. I've thought about moving, but every single other thing in the area has been too expensive or too ugly in my opinion. Then again, I am an architecture snob.

tahnks benson. I was thinking of those places, thought it would be cool to actually live in a neighborhood type setting, but those are harder to find.
