Any Jaguar comments?

My wife is looking at getting a new/used car. She had her heart set on getting a year of 2 old used Toyota Sequoia. But, we went on a lot today and saw a 2003 Jaguar X-type that she liked that was considerably less than the Sequoia. We then went to the Jaguar dealership and, hell, she can get a brand new X-type cheaper than a used Sequoia with low miles. So, of course she than realizes that the S-class Jag is pretty nice too. Any comments on Jaguars? I really don't know anything about them.

They are great-if you are a British poetry professor who only uses it on foggy Sunday mornings to motor down paths made for bicycles at 30 kilometres per hour.
Oh, and if you spend any less than 10 times on repairs and maintenance compared to the Toyota, I would be shocked.
And I hope you don't mind the scorn, laughter and derision from the parts department should you ever have the effrontery to call the "dealership" that is supposed to sell parts for these things.
Maybe the cars are better now, but they used to be strictly a toy, a hobby for eccentric collectors of automotive exotica.

Very nice cars, and now decent reliability. They now also have a pretty sporty warranty that includes maintenance so I wouldn't worry too much about it especially if you are only going to have the car 3-4 years.

I know that they should NOT be pronounced Jag-you-er. ******* British.

Agree. The Type X looks like it shares platform and parts with the Taurus.
The XJ series has more of the classic Jag look.
The XK series are just rediculously good looking, but a lot more expensive.

The X type shares a platform with the former Ford Contour, sold in Europe as the Mondeo. The Contour was a great little driver's car, but adjudged too small for the American market.

The S-type actually has more parts in common with its sib, the Lincoln LS, than the X with the Contour/Mondeo. The X is a pretty decent little car for the money, but buy used: because its a Jag, its resale plummets quickly (BARGAIN).

Jag reliability has improved markedly since the FoMoCo takeover, but don't expect Honda/Toyota reliability.

If you're looking for a small sedan, have a look at the Acura TSX. Pretty inexpensive, Car and Driver 10 best.
