Any chance we play some 3-4 in 2008?

Considering our lack of depth at DT (Miller, then who??) & the abundance of quality DE & LB's, it would seem like we are well suited to play the 3-4.

Sorry if this has been discussed a bunch of times. I'm just really bored because there are like no sports going on right now that I give a **** about.

Dunno. I would guess no, since we're already learning new schemes from a new DC.

Lack of depth at DT is why some DE's are learning the DT spot, such as Lewis and Houston. With Howard moving to DE that still gives you Orakpo, Acho, Jones, Melton, Carter, and Howard at DE, with Wilcoxon, Alexander, Miller, Lewis, and Houston inside. Not counting freshmen and Ellis, at this point.

Please, no 3-4 unless it's a dime package set, with extra DB's, not LB's.

Makes all the sense in the world to me. OR

Jarvis Humphrey and Kheeston Randall need to step up quickly. It would also be a windfall if somehow, someway Andre Jones makes it back soon.

The combination of a fully healed powerhouse Brian Orakpo on one end, and a combination of Eddie "Manster" Jones, Aaron Lewis, Lamaar Houston, Sam Acho, Henry Melton along with Roy Miller and Ben Alexander.

Plenty of material for Muschamp to work with!

I think Lewis and Houston moving inside is an indicator that we're going to be primarily a 4-3 defense. In fact I've even heard that a 4-2-5 will be used often.

It would also give you a lot of flexibility. I could see guys like like Orakpo, Jones & Houston playing a little OLB & rushing off the edge where all they have to beat is a TE or RB. And since we have so many DE's, we could easily switch back & forth from 3-4 to 4-3 to keep the offense guessing.

there was a good explanation of a 4-3 vs a 3-4 and why it may be a bad idea. Might have been hpslugga, but it was very well written. may want to look it up, but it relies heavily on the linebackers stopping the run because of gaps and takes them out of the equation a bit more in the situations where they pass out of running formations.

And I got a reply back from Trey McLean on the Co-op From the Stands message board discussing the Ellis/Higgins situation and some positive comments on Michael Wilcoxon.

With our speed on the DL and especially DE, I wouldn't mind some 5-2. Just put massive speed on the line with Orakpo, Melton, Jones, Houston, and Lewis. Further we also have Acho and Carter both made some great plays in the spring game. With all of those DE's they should all see time on the field with a healthy rotation.

Right now we have 8 scholarships on DE, with Lewis, Melton, and Orakpo as SR, Jones a JR, Houston and Acho as SOPH, and Howard and Carter as FS. I still think if Melton should redshirt to allow him to grow as a defensive player and get a chance for more PT the next year without having to split time with Orakpo and Lewis. However, if Lewis moves to DT, that changes things, but I wouldn't mind seeing Melton for another year.

in a 3-4, your DL plays less in the gaps, leaving the linebackers to cover those gaps to play the run. If the linebackers are worried more about the run through those gaps, they're more susceptible to being beat by a play action pass. (I believe that was the explanation, could be wrong)
