Any chance someone will redshirt this season?

Good question DH. The sentiment I seem to be hearing from most internet junkies is that Williams could redshirt.

We are just so deep in the backcourt that it will be hard for him to get time, especially now that JB has been cleared. Their would be minutes for Williams at the 3 spot behind Hamilton usually, but I expect those minutes to go to Mason solely because he is a senior now. Also Damion will be playing some on the wing when we need to go bigger.

At the two it all depends on whether JB can claim the PG job like many on here are expecting to happen. That would free up SOME minutes at the 2 spot, though not many, for Shawn behind Avery and Varez.

I'm sure SL or smh have a better picture of what is expected to happen, maybe they can chime in with some first-hand knowledge instead of theoretical conjecture.

I just wonder if a player would rather avg 3 or 4 min a game or RS the year.

Williams was pretty heavily recruited in Texas this past year (obviously not at the level of Hamilton or Bradley). SW has played against some of the best HS talent in the country considering Duncanville's schedule this past season so hopefully that will help speed up the learning curve to playing College ball.

The only player of the returning guys that might make sense would be Chapman? Varez played pretty good defense and could be very beneficial, especially if he can start hitting more of his outside shots.

Uhh, yeah I guess it could be Clint but it's not like we have the depth up front that we do in the backcourt. I don't think I'd redshirt any of the big guys, especially since Damion isn't really an interior player and Dexi is super-prone to foul troublez.

One thing to make note of is that Williams might have to be ready to play in a hurry next year if Hamilton, Bradley, and Balbay all leave along with Mason, James, and Dex.

I would think Williams and Chapman should redshirt. We could really use Chapman in 2011. And he could use a year just working out with Todd Wright.

Not sure we need Chapman this year as we get back Hill and Wangmene this year. And Pittman will play more minutes as he is in much better shape.

IMHO Chap is light years ahead of Hill in every facet of the game other than interior defense and screening...

Let's run through the team.

Obviously no redshirt for James, Pittman, Johnson, Hamilton, Bradley, Balbay, Mason, Ward, Brown, and Lucas.

I don't think Champan will be a candidate for a redshirt. He is our #2 big man, and I expect him to have a significant impact this year. I hesitate to say he will have a breakout year, but don't rule it out. He seemed a little frenetic at times last year, but I expect him to play more under control this season. I think we will also be seing more 10-15 foot jumpers from him this season as well.

Wagmene won't redshirt since he was out most of last year already with a medical redshirt. I also hope we get a significant contribution from him this year as well.

I think Hill already used his redshirt.

That leaves Williams as the only possible candidate.

But I would say why even bother? Isn't it the same as in football where you don't have to declare whether or not you are redshirting at the beginning of the season? Can't it be decided later if you don't get in any games? I would just let them all play if they earn the playing time. As an earlier poster said, he will be needed next year and the game experience could be crucial, even if it is relatively minimal.

The time is now , and our chances of getting into the final dance could happen this year.
SF is not a problem Jordan 23-30 minutes but if I was RB I would limit his minutes as well as Avery so that they do not hit the freshmen wall before they get to the dance.

Williams will get 10 / 15 minutes depending on the team that we are playing, Williams has shown that he can defense the 1-3 position in HS but may not be able to do that in college. He can shot the ball very well and his handle is good. If we run into a 3 guard team then I would guess that Mason sees some PT at the 3 spot. Maybe 4-7 minutes.
At the 2 Avery gets the majority of minutes ,Veraz maybe Brown then Mason.
If everyone has a decent year we could lose 5-6 players next year and they would be our best players.

Yep, the best candidate to RS would be Williams, but he will probably give UT some valuable minutes so no RS for him.

It would be great to RS one of the guards, but none of them are good candidates and we could end up needing them all by end of season. Brown & Bradley have more all around talent, but the other guards all offer some strong skills as well.

Like skymonkey said, we're loaded for bear and it's time to hunt. Hopefully, we keep one of Brown, Bradley or Hamilton for a sophomore year. However, if all three are good enough to go after one year, that probably means UT wins a NC.

I think Rick knows this roster has a chance to be THE team of his coaching career and everyone on the roster has a chance to be a significant contributor in some facet of the game.

The bigs that could redshirt will probably be needed at some point due to Dexter's fouling, and Williams is the type of zone buster that could come in handy. I mean, the team has other (many) capable but streaky deep shooters, but Williams is the type of guy that can get minutes when the wings are off the mark and pop in 3 3s in 8 minutes. There are no other candidates.

The one crazy suggestion would be Mason, but obviously that isn't going to happen. Mason arguably would be more valuable to the 2010 team if the backcourt is gutted by early departure by guys like Bradley, Balbay, Brown, and Hamilton. It's a little confusing to figure out Mason's role in this year's backcourt, and especially so if Ward starts to steal some minutes as the defensive stopper.

yeah. I'm with most folks...I don't anticipate any RS'ing. I've heard Williams, but I don't see how it happens. he flew up the ranks over the last year and can stick it from the outside. Hamilton will be in foul trouble at some point.

we've lacked size at the 3 for some time. don't think we're gonna let it sit on the bench now that we have it.

Mason popped into my head immediately (not that it would happen). I don't see a meaningful role for him this year and he' be really valuable next year if we get decimated by departures as I believe we might (and sorta hope we do bc that means things went well probably).

It's basketball. Short of an injury, no one redshirts anymore due to the short length of time they stay around.
