Any Builders on here? Window Question

I am in process of picking out windows for a new house we are building. We are going with a fairly modern exterior and interior. Want clean lines, and look of silver anonidized windows.....sort of a commercial look. Have been planning on using some aluminum windows by RAM Industries. But, my builder has convinced me to consider using a Jeld Wen window to save some money.

actually, I didn't give the full story. the RAM Industries windows were my(and architect's) idea. I decided to go better windows over metal roof. I'm paying more for them over the contract price. My builder wants me to go with different windows and try to get the metal roof too all for the same price that I'm paying for the windows if we can get it all done and get the same look in the windows that we want.

There is an architect or builder here in Austin that started a company to manufacture cost-effective modern commercial windows for residential applications. I do not have their name in front of me, but they were on the most recent AIA austin homes tour. You can track them down through that.

I have sued JeldWen for defective windows. There was a gripe about the design but the bigger problem was contractor installing them. Get BIgWill's input, but the contractor is more of a problem than the actual window on 90% of the window installation failures I've seen.

cbs, I worked a defect case with a window leak in a bay window. When we did DT, we discovered tears in the flashing, every 10 inches or so. The exact same shape tear.

Obviously, somebody dropped the roll on something sharp and made a rip for several layers, but they used it anyway.

Idiots.

Jeld Wen is a good company, but they pander to builders. Your guy is probably getting a kick back, if he convinces you to use Jeld Wen.

I would not cut corners with windows. There are other areas where you can try to save some money.

What ever brand you go with, inspect them well before installation. I learned the hard way. I have new windows with finger prints on the *inside* of the dual pane sandwich. This was not apparent when the windows were covered with stickers and construction dust.

What's the dollar difference between the windows vs. the metal roof?

Being a roofing contractor, I'm more apt to like the benefits of the metal roofing vs. anything else... & I think the roof is a better investment.

It's the cost of the metal roofing that has me curious, however I'd need to know the type / style / pitch / 1 or 2 story, etc.
