Ants overrunning Houston

eventually we will destroy enough of the ecosystem that we will not be able to stop insect growth....we are not going to die from a supervolcano, asteroid, global warming, a virus, or an economic collapse...no, it will be the insects.

Evolution and natural selection create some powerful beasts. Insects have so many offspring so fast they can evolve incredible "abilities" and "skills."

I'm curious about their attraction to electricity though. Is it the heat? Does it kill them? If it killed them it seems like natural selection would have killed this species off before it got started.

I'm not sure what has decided to invade my house this spring, but it's not these ants. I have some sort of teeny little black bug, that looks sort of like some kind of weevil. But it is not in the places that generally attract weevils. Instead, I have found them in the kitchen, bathrooms, entry way. In short, all over the house. I put ant traps out EVERYWHERE, and that does seem to have helped. It's driving me crazy though, trying to figure out what they are, and why they have all of a sudden shown up in big numbers.

Fire ants like electricity or powerboxes and the like. So it is not unique to this breed of ant.

The Ags will figure out a way to get rid of these ants. They're not good at many things but this kind of thing is one of them.

They are called "Red imported fire ants" Most descriptions say they vary in color from reddish brown to black. One website said the females are red and males are black. In my experience, they typically look orangish brown in appearance.

EDIT : There is a black variety:

I'm always a little leery of any story where insects are taking over the world. By now, the fire ants were supposed to cover every square inch of Texas except for the areas that the killer bees were killing cities of people.

Just wait until later this summer when we go for a month of drout followed by a few days of massive rains that bring all the fire ants up from underground. They do pretty much cover the state.
