Ants / Home Exterior

We've got some bigger ants crawling on the exterior of our house, back patio area. I don't think they're fire ants, and as I can put them on my hand and they don't show any interest in chowing down on me.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I work in pest control. Carpenter ants seem to be making an early appearance this year. Trailing ants would indicate there is a nest inside the walls of your home or in some rotten wood nearby. Find the nest and treat with a bait or residual spray.

Most likely carpenter ants. You can use Orthene (the really stinky stuff) to some decent effect if you puff it directly onto the ants as they trail along, and to excellent effect if you find where they are entering your house and puff it onto the trailhead, as it were. I got rid of a carpenter ant colony in my house that way after other attempts using baits and regular sprays failed miserably.
