First off, I started to add this to the 'Astros Countdown to the Playoffs' thread but decided to start another considering that thread seems to have lost its mojo after the recent struggles by the Astros due to Bud Selig/Hurricane Ike/Bud/this team just isn't that good/Bud/etc...
On that note, try to follow me here...
anyone understand the tiebreaker rules as it pertains to a three-way tie for the Wild Card? If I’m reading it correctly, it’s possible Houston could have yet another last minute trip to Milwaukee for an unscheduled regular season game.
I know it's a longshot, but I'm kinda surprised neither Buster Olney or Jayson Stark or any one of those guys who love this kind of stuff have written an article about the following...
First off, this post is being written upon the completion of Monday's games with the standings as follows:
Mets: 86-70
Brewers: 85-71
Astros: 82-73
In order for a three-way tie to occur, I'm assuming the following will occur over the final 6 games (7 in the case of the Astros):
Mets: 3-3
Brewers: 4-2
Astros: 7-0
(a three-way tie could also occur upon the following finish:
Mets: 2-4;
Brewers: 3-3;
Astros: 6-1
...or…
Mets: 1-5;
Brewers: 2-4;
Astros: 5-2...you get the idea)
Obviously, none of the above is very pretty if you are an Astros fan...but in the theme of this thread, let's assume it happens.
If it does, I believe the three-way tiebreaker would be subject to Rule 33 and/or Rule 34..whatever and wherever that isThe Link
While sparing you all of the 'crap', assuming the above occurred, the teams would be ‘ranked’ with the Astros being ranked #1, Brewers #2 and Mets #3.
What that ranking does is allow the #1 team to choose whether they'd want to play two one-game 'playoff' games at home or a single one-game playoff game on the road in order to get into the Divisional round. If the #1 ranked team (Astros) chose to play one game on the road, the #2 ranked team (Brewers) would get to host the #3 ranked team (Mets) in a one-game playoff. Whoever wins that game would then get to host the #1 ranked team (Astros) in a final winner-take-all matchup to decide who is the wild-card.
Not sure what the Astros would do in such a situation...On one hand, they'd already be at home after playing the Cubs on Monday, Sept 29 and either the Mets or Brewers would have to come to Houston on little or no notice (considering the Astros would have to beat the Cubs on Monday afternoon/evening to force the three-way tie)...on the other hand, if the Astros took the ‘home-field advantage', they could have to win up to nine games in nine days and wouldn't have the luxury of having a day off on Tuesday to watch the Brewers/Mets knocked one or the other out.
If the Astros decided to take the day off, the Brewers could force the Mets to travel to Milwaukee on the same little or no notice...but the Astros would then have to travel to either Milwaukee or New York late Tuesday or early Wednesday based on who wins Tuesday’s playoff game.
Wow I’m confused.
Due to the make up game with the Cubs, this may be worse than the four or five way ties they were talking about last year.
