Story:

Haley Crouser has the potential to be a serious, elite-level heptathlete.

"GRESHAM -- I spent an enjoyable couple hours at Gresham High School last week, working on a story about Haley Crouser.

If she stays healthy and motivated, Crouser is a once-in-a-generation track and field athlete. She figures to be heavily recruited.

She only is a junior, so the recruiting battle has yet to get going in earnest. But when you figure she threw the javelin 173 feet as a high school sophomore, and has the athleticism and drive to be a serious, elite-level heptathlete, well, this could be interesting.

Haley's dad, Dean, holds the UO school records in the shot and discus. That's right, he ranks ahead of Olympic gold medalist Mac Wilkins on Oregon's career list in the discus. Her uncle, Brian, threw the old javelin 312 feet, also a UO record with that implement. Brian was a 1992 Olympian.

Haley's brother, Sam, is a redshirt freshman javelin thrower at Oregon. Her cousin, Ryan, is a freshman who throws the shot and discus for Texas, and recently took fifth in the shot at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Dean told me Haley would make up her own mind about college.

"We'll have to wait and see," he said. "That will absolutely be Haley's decision. Sam kind of went back and forth. He just didn't know, although we always knew he kind of wanted to go to Oregon.

"When Ryan set foot on the Texas campus, he knew. I really hope it is like that for 'Hay.' That it's, 'this is the place I would like to be and I'll be happy.' I hope it works out that way."

Dean said Ryan picked Texas, in part, because the Longhorns have a group of top-level college throwers with which to train.

"I think that will be important for her too," he said. "Who do I train with every day? Not just the coach, but is there anyone else there or will I just be on an island."
