There was an editorial cartoon that I saw about 3 decades ago (more or less) and I wish I had clipped it and saved it. It depicted the Presidency as a sort of dungeon torture chamber populated by various goons (labeled as The Press, The Loyal Opposition, Foreign Adversaries, etc., and standing in the center was Uncle Sam in shirtsleeves and holding a cat-o-nine-tails whip, and calling off to the side, "OK, send in the next guy!" (Take a look at Bill C and GWB at the beginning and end of their 8 years in office. Or see how much Jimmy C aged in only 4 years. That says a lot for the strain of running for and serving as President.)
