Andy's Cafe, Rockdale

Anyone else remember this place from the 60's and 70's?

My parents were from Lexington, so Andy's, (a 17 mile drive up 77), was a special treat when visiting the grandparents.

If it was fried, Andy's served the best one to be found.

Chicken, chicken fried steak, catfish, potatos, onion rings, you name it.

There was a small municipal airport near there with a B-25 Mitchell parked out front.

I don't know what made me think of that.

It was really great. My dad bought me a T-bone steak there in 1964. It was bigger than the platter it was served on. French fries (from real potatoes) wer piled as high as they could be on top of the steak and another platter with a huge pile of cafe made onion rings. Iced tea salad, roll and desert. It was fabulous.

I think that it set my back about $2.00 apiece.

I have often wondered if it was still there.

A million years ago, Schubert's was the place to stop on 290 in Giddings. Great chicken fried steak. It's long gone, but I still think of it when I drive by the building.

There used to a place in Milano like that. The CFS hung over the sides of the plate and it was served with a foot high stack of homemade fries on top. The large CFS came with two steaks.

AustinTejas, that probablywas Chuck's BBQ.

I remember Andy's. They had the BEST ham sandwich you ever put a tooth on!

Another good place in that area of the state is Johnny Reb's Dixie Cafe, near the junction of Highways 6 and 79 in Hearne.

Excellent CFS. The "regular" one is huge, and the "large" looks like a catcher's mitt smothered in gravy.

I used to coordinate my trips between home and Austin in order to hit Hearne at around lunch or dinner time.

The old Andy's building is still there, but it's been closed 15-20 years. I remember the huge pile of french fries on a platter. Good times.
The Dixie Cafe in Hearne the same thing as Johnny Reb'? Dixie is great!

You're right Texanne. Chuck's BBQ!

I stopped there on my way back to Austin after just about every fishing trip to East Texas.

Schuberts chicken fry, man that place was good. Took my track team to eat there one time. They were festered up like ticks when we were done. I didn't hear a word on the bus all the way home. I think they used pork round steak instead of beef.
