One of the surfing legends of recent times. His battles with Kelly Slater were truly incredible. Kelly may win his 10th world title tomorrow. It's sad for such a legendary surfer and great guy who appeared to have a new outlook on life and on the verge of challenging for world titles again to pass so tragically, but I can't imagine what it must be like for his friend and rival to be on the verge of accomplishing an unheard-of feat when amongst such tragic circumstances.
Andy's & Kelly's rivalry in the mid-2000s was truly the highlight of professional surfing in recent memory. It was almost as though the competition was cheapened in some way when Andy was no longer one of the primary challengers for the title, so it's safe to say that the surfing world has suffered a tremendous loss today, just when Andy was regaining his greatness as a competitive surfer.
Andy will be missed as much as anyone could. R.I.P.
Damn, that's sad news. Wasn't he arguably the second most widely known professional surfer in the world?
Is there any use for methadone other than a substitute for heroin addiction? Or is dengue fever likely to be fatal?
Like many illnesses Dengue Fever can be fatal if not treated and dehydration sets in, but honestly for a healthy guy his age it would be surprising if this killed him (unless he'd had it for quite a while without seeking treatment). Of course the combination of Dengue Fever and powerful prescription medication (not prescribed for the fever) could certainly do him in. If he was already sick then started popping methadone I would say this outcome isn't surprising.
The methadone story may be a false rumor. Another story says anti-anxiety and sleeping pills found in the room, so the death may be accidental. Autopsy results will take a couple of weeks at least.
I did learn that methadone can be prescribed for intense pain though, not just for drug addiction rehab purposes.
