And the winner is - Blu-Ray

There is no such thing as a long-term solution in consumer electronics. But I get your point. Fact of the matter is, downloadable HD movies are nowhere near reality at this point. I'd bet 5+ years before it even gets legs, nevermind maturity and full adoption.

It's going to be a very long time before everyone in America has a fast enough internet connection to download HD movies.

I think it's funny you claim BR isn't a long-term solution and then say that they'll go the way of the VHS which was the standard for ~20 years. People may go towards downloading movies eventually, but there will still be a market for people who want the physical product (i.e. people who still buy CDs).

We saw the writing on the wall before Christmas. I think Toshiba is doing the right thing exiting so quickly.

They say they are going to keep up the support, but I bet there are a lot of HD DVD owners upset today.

Glad I went with the PS3 and Blu Ray!!

Is it true that Sony is only making the 40GB version of the PS3 now? I thought I saw an 80GB at Target a while back, but that may have been old stock.

I haven't heard anything about 40G only. I have the 80 (maybe it is 60) but i got one of the first ones out. I have been very happy with it.

If you are buying it for a Blu Ray player you should get the remote control though. It operates the machine like a regular remote instead of the controller. Does all the same functions but makes it a little easier. Just a suggestion.

I actually like the controller much more for blu-ray viewing. I know where all the buttons are so everything works great. Got the remote for free but I never use it...

also, there's a slim chance that Sony announces their new sku this week at gdc so if you want to wait for a 120gb version with the ds3 controller you might wait a few days to see what happens.

Glad I didn't buy the HD-DVD add on for the XBox360. I told myself to wait until the HD-DVD vs BluRay deal was decided before I got a PS3 and I guess it's that time.

FYI, Xbox Live and Apple TV already have HD downloads. Its a matter of buying those devices. Its not some far off dream and works quite well. Apple TV actually has full studio support. The tech is here and is mature. Its more a matter of people actually choosing the equipment.

No one should cite any adoption stats for HD discs now, as they were stats created in a market that required consumers to take a chance on a format that 1. might not win and 2. wouldn't be able to play all movies. The dynamic of the market has changed greatly, and all of the things people like about DVD's (having it as soon as you want it, security of owning the media, etc.) will all still be true in high definition. Blu-Ray is certainly going to be the best way to get high definition content for the next 5 years (especially in 1080p with lossless sound, I challenge anyone to wait for that download).

A blu ray disc usually has around 20gb of data on it. It's going to be awhile before most people can download a file that size in a reasonable amount of time.

The movie itself is still prohibitive for download in the current market/bandwidth environment. Just isn't going to happen soon. Sorry to say.

But, for those that like "HD" at 720p, Apple/Miscrosoft/Amazon et al is going to suit you just fine. Me, I watch on a 70" display and 720p is not good enough - simple as that. I NEED Blu-ray to deliver 1080p content. I also care a great deal about sound quality and lossless audio is a must for me, something downloads cannot do.

Yep, I remember investing big bucks in Boston, Kansas and REO Speedwagon 8-Tracks thinking that was the coolest end-all technology too. Knock yourself out guys, and enjoy what you have. Just be careful investing too much in one technology. I can't tell you how many albums I have/had in LP, 8-track, cassette, cd, mp3...and movies will be the same...VHS, DVD, High-Def DVD...............

^ Similar in concept to downloading a HD h264 mkv file stripped of all the extras. 4-5GB vs 20GB.

I don't buy the bandwidth argument. They can push HD VOD all day over the same lines. Once TW figures out a way to make money off it, they will figure out a way to make it happen.
