Analysis of TCU?

They're a team that coasted thru a regional with OregSt & aTm. They're a legitimate top 15 team, and certainly more dangerous than BC or Army in a 3 game series. I'd say we'd better be on top of our game and bring our offense to the Disch... Not really the analysis you were looking for, just sayin.....

From a cursory review of their stats and a handful of games I saw them play:

TCU is a good hitting team, and they get a lot of extra base hits. Only one guy in their standard order is batting less than .300, and that guy is batting .297. On the flip side, no one on their bench can hit worth a damn, which tells me they don't pinch hit much. Fullerton is the only team they've played in a weekend series that has anywhere near the caliber of pitching Texas has. They did win that series, however.

As for pitching, they have one or two solid but not outstanding starters. Their best is Kyle Winkler, who I presume we will see tomorrow. He is 7-0 with a 3.95 ERA. They have 2 or 3 pretty good relievers, including their closer, who is really good when he's on. It's a pretty good staff, but, to put it simply, they don't measure up to ours. The interesting thing about their pitching staff is that the don't have a single guy who has thrown more than 70 innings. Texas, by contrast, has 5 pitchers who have gone 70+. They used 6 pitchers against us when we played them back in April, and judging by their stats, that's a pretty common thing for them. Their starters don't last very long, and they rely on their bullpen a ton, so hopefully our hitters don't get too cocky if the starter gets pulled early.

Defensively, they don't appear to field the ball particularly well (.968).

For what it's worth, we threw 5 pitchers against them in the 6-0 game. Austin Dicharry got the most work (4 innings) and completely shut them down. They also faced Cole Green, Stayton Thomas, Taylor Jungmann, and Brandon Workman. Thomas was the only one they got to, but he wasn't in long enough to do any damage. So the Frogs have seen most of the pitchers they are likely to see this weekend but were highly unsuccessful against them the first time out. I'm not saying that means a whole lot, but I think the fact that TCU hasn't faced great pitching this season is relevant when discussing their offensive prowess.

I think TCU is a bit like Army in that they rely on offense to win games. TCU has better pitching than Army, no question, but I don't think it's good enough to win this series if Texas remembers to bring their bats.

I was curious about their stolen base stats and don't think they will exploit us there. 59 SB's on 85 attempts. I don't consider us all that great a base stealing team and we are 70 for 91. Let's polish them off in two so I can relax again for 7 days.

Thanks for the link. BA makes it sound like we are waaay more beatable than TCU. Also there is a misleading stat at the top of each team's summary where they talk about # of appearances in Super-Regionals... I believe they are talking about this decade, but I don't see where they indicate that. it just looks like we've only been to the Supers 6 times, and we all know that aint right. I dunno, maybe I just missed that.

I wish they would include the names of the coaches they are getting "scouting reports" from. I don't think they'd be so quick to say "you only need 5 runs to beat Texas" in one paragraph and "you're going to beat Texas 2-1" in another if they had to stand behind it.

6 super regionals is probably correct, but misleading. Remember, we haven't had the super regional format very long...maybe since 2000. That gives us '00, '02-'05 and '09 for 6.

Thanks for the great link. My guess is the Texas' analysis is from Steve Smith, Baylor. He made similar comments at the coaches' press conference prior to be B12 Tournament. Plus, his seniority in the B12 would make BA want his opinion.

I didn't like the "dig" on Brandon Loy, that the slow turf makes him an "even better shortstop." You could put Brandon in a cow pasture and he would still be the best shortstop in the league.

It sounds to me like the B12 coach was talking about how we can be beaten and the MWC coach was talking about why TCU can win. Like the B12 guy is a bit jealous and would like to see us lose, while the MWC guy would be happy that a conference mate beat a B12 team to get to Omaha.

Then again maybe I've just got orange glasses.

Noticeably absent was any mention of Kevin Keyes. I hope he gives them a reason to write something the next time they write about the Horns!

Strasburg and Morris are watching the rest of the postseason from home, and Berry may be joining them soon. The point being, there is a lot more to being successful in the postseason than having one great pitcher. And in my opinion, Texas has a number of great pitchers.

I don't care if Texas wins every game by 1 run or 10. Every team we play from here on out will be "quality," and it won't matter what the margin of victory is. What matters is who wins and who loses, and this team has a demonstrated knack for pulling it together to beat good teams.

It's also important to recognize that the regular season and the postseason are completely different. Everyone wants to downplay the quality of competition in the Texas regional based on what those teams did in the regular season. But the fact of the matter is that Army and Boston College played great baseball last weekend, and if Texas ends up getting to Omaha and doing well, I think they will look back on the Austin Regional and be grateful to those two teams for pushing us as far as they did. It was not an easy regional, but we were undefeated. You can't do better than that. People can ***** about scores all they want, but a win is a win, and that's all that matters in the postseason. There are no style points.

BC and Army both played good defense against us.

I thought we blew a number of chances offensively in both games, but I kind of expected that vs. Army after the previous marathon. And we did score 14 - it's just that 8 came later than I would've liked.

Does TCU have a good lefthander? If they don't, we should be able to beat them today as we hit righties pretty well.

I dunno either. Pro Line (their sponsor) is run by a TCU grad and they have a TON of unis. TCU wore the black tops for all of their regional wins and decided to keep it going I guess.

I reviewed TCU's roster. Looks like we will face Tyler Lockwood, RH junior who beat Oregon State in their regional championship game. The concerning thing is they have 4 other pitchers with significant innings this year that have not yet pitched.

Bottom line, TCU is not "out of pitching" and we need to "get our groove back" at the plate. Taylor Jungmann needs to bring his "A" game. We need some baserunners to pressure their defense.
