An ugly win but still a win

Hats off to Baylor for playing hard all the way through. Even when we were up by 18 in the first half, the Bears didn't lack for effort.

And what a heroic individual effort from LaceDarius Dunn. Corey's defense was solid, but there's not much you can do when a guy heats up like that.

Glad to see our 'Horns hold on and come away with the win. If anything reinforces our need to improve at the foul line, this game was it.

We were playing with a huge lead. Halftime intermissions can be a buzz kill.

What is most perplexing to me is how we can't hit from outside in the second halves of games lately.

Over the past five contests, we're shooting 15 percent (3 of 20) from beyond the arc in the second half. We went 0-for-3 against Mizzou, 1-for-2 against aggy, 2-for-5 against Tech, 0-for-5 against OU, and 0-for-5 against Baylor.

Also, our offense seems dynamic and efficient in the first half, but come the second half, it reverts to the random, haphazard form we witnessed the previous two years.

Still, a win is a win and I'm very happy our 'Horns are 10-0 in Big 12 play.

They have been playing down to their competition lately. Hopefully, the second half of the Baylor game will serve as a wake-up call. If Dunn's 3-point shot with half a minute to go had stayed down, we could have lost the game.

You'll pardon me if I don't apologize for a 9-point win over an extremely dangerous team. In fact, I'll tell y'all right now if we go 15-0, I'll be wagering on the Baylor money-line in the last game of the year. Sure, we could have turned this into a real giggler if we hit our FTs, but Baylor has a World of talent and will be a horrible draw for some low-middle seed in the tourney.

Baylor is a very talented team. they could be trouble for someone in March.

The first eight minutes of the 2nd half saw our lead chewed down. Baylor figured out how to defend a little better, especially against Hamilton.

While Balbay was in the game Baylor sagged way off him and used the extra man to cheat toward Hamilton, effectively neutralizing him. Barnes put Brown back on the court and Baylor had to play honest defense. defend everyone. We still couldn't hit our shots, but the shots did open up.

and we managed a nine point win against a very talented team on a day when we weren't our best.

I'll take it, any day.

Someone asked before the game for impressions of Baylor. My response was "capable, but erratic". I was fully aware of the Bear's potential and I'm very happy with the win, but there are legitimate concerns with this team, not the least of which is atrocious FT shooting.

To a certain extent, even more of a concern to me is a developing pattern of letdowns in the second half. These actually seem to begin at the end of the first half. Whether it is playing down to the competition, lack of a killer instinct, or whatever, it is virtually palpable. Then again, perhaps it's just my imagination interwoven with my unreasonable expectations.

What was disappointing was that we let them dunk/layup so many times without even a foul. At some point you have to defend your turf and we backed down. You just don't let people dunk on you like that. Rake them over the arms, but damn, stop the dunk. That is what they did to us.
