(I didn't know which forum to put this in. It's not really West Mall but it's not Quack's, either.)

Forbes ranked the most miserable cities in America. Their criteria were commute times, income tax rates, superfund sites, unemployment, violent crimes, and weather. Here are the Top 10:

1. Detroit -- Is anyone surprised by this?
2. Stockton, CA
3. Flint, MI
4. New York
5. Philly
6. Chicago
7. L.A.
8. Modesto, CA
9. Charlotte, NC
10. Providence, RI

they usually factor some pretty arbitrary things in those lists.
i've always heard great things about charlotte, too.
also, i've heard that flint, michigan is about as bad a slum as there is.

Well, that's kind of an incomplete formula. To be truly miserable, they should balance those negative factors against the positive factors. For NYC, Chicago, and L.A., the positives outweigh those negative factors.

This is like saying that Shaquille O'Neal must be one of the most unhappy people in America because he pays so much in taxes, the electric bill for his mansions is so high, his custom tailored clothes are so expensive, he has to travel so much during the year, etc.

jive, are you talking about o'neal or al gore?

2000 census numbers:

1. Detroit - 951,270
2. Stockton, CA - 243,771
3. Flint, MI - 124,943
4. New York - 8,008,278
5. Philly - 1,517,550
6. Chicago - 2,896,016
7. L.A. - 3,694,820
8. Modesto, CA - 188,856
9. Charlotte, NC - 540,828
10. Providence, RI - 173,618

Because, clearly, these cities all have so much in common.

How in the hell is Modesto on that list? It's no place I would want to live, but come on, the place is basically farmland. How does it even qualify? Apples and oranges to places like Philly and Detroit.

In addition to Gary and Newark, I would also have to say that any list which omits East Saint Louis, IL is worthless.

Then again, by this same criteria, cities like Portland and New Orleans should have also made the list. And yet, I don't see too many people complaining about those places. New Orleans may be rebuilding, but at least it still has the Quarter.

Stupid list.

I have family in Flint, and my wife is from just outside of Detroit. Both are horrible, horrible places, and well deserving of this "honor."
