Yet, the government still wants to make legislation stopping them from charging for bags.

And not to rub it in or anything, but their (as of this morning former) CEO is a proud double graduate of McCombs.

again? didnt they do this a few years ago? AA sucks. I was a huge continental fan until they got bought by united. now continental sucks. Unless you follow the southwest model, you are not going to make it. bad business models for some of these airlines.

Actually, American never went bankrupt post 9-11 like the other major airlines, because Arpey would not let them. Instead they continued their ways of losing money and allowed its competitors to merge into bigger and better airlines.

Score one for the unions.

Ha southwest, c'mon man. Unairworthy planes flown by pilots that can't get jobs elsewhere who talk **** about you on the radio while in the air.

AA has an 82% capacity rate, which is good in the indusry and the only airline not making money because all the other airlines had so much debt forgiven.

The unions are killing AA and will kill the other airlines except SWA again in the near future.

Pilots clamor over any major airline job given that the supply is way beyond the demand.

No inflight entertainment, no international destinations, no business or first class seats. They don't cater to the business world at all, and the revenue generated from first/business typically makes up a large portion of the total revenue from the flight despite the limited number of seats, particularly on international flights.

It must be nice only having to deal with 737s since you eliminate a lot of extra work for pilots, instructors, and far more importantly mechanics and engineers. I could fly circles around anybody if they had to deal with 10 different things at once and I only had I deal with 1. But the 737 can't do what other airlines need to do, so trying to compare southwest with the big boys in terms of reliability and profitability can't be done fairly. Until southwest grows out of its RJ-eqsue network, they're a second class airline.

I also find it extremely hypocritical for Southwest to routinely claim itself as being the only airline to not have a fatality on board. I guess having it's plane run over a 6 year old kid because the pilots overshot an already too short runway doesn't technically count as an onboard fatality, so it's all good.

Good rebuttal, Rex.

The part about SWA not catering to the business world is one of the strangest things I've read here in a while.

SWA is what I fly when it is within Texas or within one or two states.

I don't need first class or business class. Easy on and off at all airports for SWA.

Give me no frills all day long.

The only time I fly American is when it is cross country travel and it is an event when I have to fly American. It is not an event to jump on a SWA flight for a morning meeting back in the office by afternoon.

Part of the AA problem is DFW and parking. Every try to park at DFW for a day flight? Compare that to Love Field for a Day flight, night and day.

SWA is awesome for less than 2 hour flights where they don't have to hop skip and jump through the ******** Wright Amendment, that AA backed all the way to shut down Love Field and SWA.

Oh no, AA backed the wright amendment?? Wow, well southwest lobbied against high speed rail in Texas for the same reason AA had the wright amendment. It's business, plain and simple, southwest is no different. You want to blame one, you gotta blame the other.

Different model, different markets. I ain't flying in cattle call boarding with no entertainment on anything longer than 2 hours, and I'm certainly not flying southwest if the company is paying. Low cost, low class.

Alaska air ain't all that bad, particularly it's stock. But blue star airlines' stock is amazing, rumors abound of a takeover possibility.

Yah, I gotcha. I mean, to me, Southwest is just an expanded RJ. Their business model is good, clearly, but, let's say Texas had approved high speed rail in the triangle, bam, SW loses a huge chunk of it's business. If we ever get to a point where high speed rail becomes a reality (big if) across the country, SW will be hurt.

Plus, my views are clearly slanted as I am biting at the hand that takes from the hand that feeds me.

I flew American last week and will be flying them again tomorrow.

I really haven't noticed that they are especially horrible or especially non-horrible. Maybe my expectations are low.

If you want High Speed Rail, do it as a Private company, not government sponsered.

If we had high speed rail vs SWA vs. driving what is the fastest from my house to my customers office downtown office.

Car-less than 4 hours, cell phone available whole trip
Flexible schedule, mileage on car, $80 in gas
Air-less than 4 hours, limited Cell phone useage, not flexible schedule, Rewards, Rent Car or Taxi or someone picks me up and parking cost at love
Train-less than 4 hours cell phone useage, I would guess not as flexible as SWA, Rent Car or Taxi or someone picks me up and parking cost at Train station

I don't see the justification for High speed Rail between Dallas and Austin. Air would be faster from Dallas to SA or Houston or anywhere in Texas. Of course that is my opinion.

Longhorny, who do you work for? I know you're a recent grad that took some time to find a job in a tough market - good for you. An engineer if I recall. And Jeopardy! champ.

And if anyone is interested in my take on why AA sucks as a company, let me know and I'll compile a list. #1 reason would be the wait times of calling their reservation desk, navigating their phone system, and the attitude of the gal that you finally talk to. Not that I blame the ones I've talked to; I'm usually pretty hot by the time they finally take my call, and they work for a demoralizing company.

You're not Alec Baldwin in disguise are you Rex? I don't suspect not being allowed to play Words With Friends your #1 reason for hating AA....

Anyway, Gary Kelly recently acknowledged he's losing ground to the post-bankrupt airlines.
