AMD K7600... heatsink removal

Plastic material on the heatsink itself began to degrade, become brittle, chip etc. I removed it and the Slot A processor, and now they are stuck together by the thermal compound. I want to just buy another heatsink, but I need to remove the old one- what are my options? Will the old thermal compound just take new compound over it and hold steady?

When I replaced the heat sinks on my processors about a year ago, I was able to remove the thermal compound with some rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth. I wasn't able to get all of it off, but the processors don't appear to be suffering any effects.

I couldn't tell if you had gotten the heatsink off the processor? If not it may have had the epoxy type compound used, like with heatsinks on video cards. One trick is to put it in the freezer for a few hours and they should snap apart.

Heatsink is still on the processor - thats the prob. Freezer trick will have no ill effects on cpu?

I also heard hair dryer getting it hot, but that seems unsafe.

I had same problem recently, used hair dryer np.

Then took rubbing alcohol and scraped the gunky crap off then used arctic silver with new hs.
