'Strong arm' attorney hurt in crash

12:23 PM CDT on Friday, May 16, 2008

By TANYA EISERER / The Dallas Morning News

DALLAS — Prominent attorney Brian Loncar was injured Thursday night when a fire engine collided with his Bentley in the Oak Lawn area, Dallas police said.

Loncar, 47, was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

The accident happened shortly before 7 p.m. as a fire truck responding to an alarm headed northbound on Lemmon Avenue, police said.

With its lights and sirens on, the fire engine went through a red light at the intersection of Lomo Alto Drive and collided with the driver's side of Loncar's 2008 Bentley, which was heading west.

The force of the accident pushed his car through the intersection, spinning off the road and into a third vehicle carrying a woman and three children.

Firefighters and those in the third vehicle suffered minor injuries, but no one was transported to the hospital, police said.

Dallas police Lt. Scott Bratcher said that the accident remains under investigation. But he said the accident will likely be ruled as Loncar's fault because he "failed to yield right of way to an emergency vehicle."

Loncar is a well-known attorney whose Web site advises people to call in the “Strong Arm” when a person has been injured “due to the negligence or misconduct of another person.”

Dallas Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Sherrie Lopez said the fire engine contained 500 gallons of water and also suffered damage to the right side of the vehicle. Ms. Lopez did not have an estimate of the damage but said the truck would have to be returned to the manufacturer for repair.

I hope he has a shitload of insurance. A woman and three children? They all need years of therapy and medical care.

(disclaimer)Assuming he is ok, I will make this wise crack(disclaimer)

I wonder if he is going to represent the woman and three children?

Please pull to the right and stop when you hear emergency vehicles approaching.
You would not believe
how baffling this basic concept seems to be for many people out there as we approach in the huge, loud fire truck with 50 led strobes flashing brighter than the sun.

However, here's the troubling part:

I remember seeing this guy's commercials in Dallas. He's the very definition of "ambulance chaser."

While at UT I interned a couple of summers at the State Bar of Texas. Loncar was basically public enemy number one, he'd been reprimanded so many times.

If the city places blame on him this will go to court. He will try everything he can so that he has zero negligence to pay to the woman and 3 children.
Wonder if he is self-insured?

( Assuming no one is hurt ) HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Couldnt happen to a nicer lowlife. Its been many moons since my short career as a claims adjuster but I remember paying a $9000 ( $150 a day for 60 days ). rental bill for a wrecker that our insured ran into. If he is found at fault the city can stick it to his insurance carrier by asking for what it would cost to rent a fire truck ( probably several hundred $$$$ a day ) for how many days it is out of service

Yeah, in your case, the fire truck had probably stopped and just started again, luckily for you. While you'll probably at least slow the next time you approach a green light where everyone's stopped, you really did nothing wrong. When we're busting a red light, we're responsible for making sure all the green light traffic sees us and is stopped or stopping.

I stop at every red light I come to until either everyone is stopped or I can tell everyone has seen me and is stopping. I wish I could say every driver of a fire apparatus does this, but I can't. Most do, but not all. So watch out, & listen. We really don't want to hurt anyone (the opposite of what we signed up for), & we're striving for improvement.

Hate to say it, but lots of cops completely blow red lights when running code 3 (lights & sirens) or even code 2 (lights only, which we don't dare do). This is especially dangerous because they're much faster, smaller, and harder to see.

In somewhat of a defence (although, glad it happened to him) if the fire truck is going 30 mph, you wouldn't hear the sirens until you were in the intersection. Unfortunately, accoustics works against anything in motion in a case such as this. Also, I think the wreck was at 7:00, which has got to be the second worst time of day to be able to see the lights.

1) Fievel121- are you British?

2) Everytime I see a commercial for how well a luxury car keeps noise out, I think "GREAT!

How is the driver supposed to hear an Ambulance, Cop, or Firetruck!?!?" Well maybe their not.

I've commented on that exact same thing (#2). Like the Lexus (I think) spot where the cannon is fired, but doesn't wake up the badger in the passenger seat? Shouldn't there be some sort of regulation about that? (even if it's an exaggeration).

mandingo is right, he is more than likely going to get out of this. in fact, he'll probably sue the city or get a nice settlement out of this
