Amazon taking over government procurement for office supplies

This will be interesting if the legislation doesn't change. There is an amendment to legislation that would allow Amazon to setup shop as the government's procurement site for office supplies. I find it odd that this is being legislated rather than going through a typical RFP process.

Wow. That is huge, potentially. Don't know how this type of change proposed could have gone thru the standard RFP process but if they can eliminate the RFP process as now exists, particularly with 'office' supply type commoditities that would be a good thing, no a great thing, imo. The govt process in its current form is inherently incompetent, slow, costly, and corrupt, and that is not just my opinion.

As someone who works for a company that does many federal RFP's you'll get no complaint from me on the slowness and costliness of these processes.

It would be a coup for Amazon to simply say "we will be the government marketplace" and if anyone can do it they can. That's a pretty large contract to give out though and I can't imagine that Amazon would acquiesce to government transparency rules.

If you bypass all of the rules and just give contracts out like its done in the private system, there is a potential for abuse. But it can't possibly be worse than what we have now.
