So I just got offered a solid 6figure job there and need some info about the town? Good Schools for kiddos? Good area to live? Anyone.....Bueller??

My husband said Southwest Amarillo is a good area and feeds into good schools

Also, Hummers is a cool sports bar and where the longhorn fans go to watch games.

There are no trees, it is flat, it is ugly, it is windy and can be damn cold too....But for 6 figures, especially the mid-6 figures, I might go there too!

Southwest Amarillo is indeed the area to live in. With that type of income you will certainly live very well up there. I have been in Austin for 11 years but spent all of my previous life in Amarillo. You will meet lots of really great people and there are tons of Horn fans up there ! I really enjoyed living close to the mountains of north New Mexico and Colorado. It has 4 distinct seasons and you will indeed freeze you *** in the winter! It is not a party town but it is a good place to raise a family.

Wind Mamba's would be my reason not to go but if you are careful and have insurance, go. For six fgures you will do well for your family.

I lived the first 19 years of my live in Amarillo. It is indeed a very cold place in the winter and I'm not talking about a fun cold either.

As others said on six figures you will live like a king and a great place for the family.

You will also learn to hate wind.

If you ever come face to face with a Mamba, and survive, you will never sleep through the night again. Cadi Mambas are my biggest fear in the Amarillo area.

Thanks for the help

We got up here friday and didnt know what to expect, we have been really suprised at how clean everything is. We got rained on last night and danced in it....been too long since we have seen rain.

We closed a deal today on a house in SW Amarillo, and very happy with what we got 3/2/2 w study 2100sqft for way less than 200K. Kids will be going to Randall high and the home is very close to my office.

Now back to Austin to pack the wagon and head north...and I am learning about the wind....been whipping all day. Good thing I will be the boss up here so I can sit inside when the weather gets bad. One lesson I am learning is that the garage is an important thing up here to keep your sweet ride out of the hail, and occasional snow.

Look forward to finding the Horn fans up here......its a long way from home

That's right!!! I forgot about that tidbit. The Tumbleweed Mamba will track it's victim a long distance over arid terrain, whatever. Once they set their focus on you, the fang's the limit to what they will do and where they will go.

I actually experienced the TW Mambas many years ago on a road between Santa Rosa,NM and Ft. Summner. All I remember is they swoop in fast and they were Big!

So I got that going for me!

Now the wind and the cold....bleh...I will just count the reasons I am coming here.

Yeah, be careful. On days when you wake up with a pinched nerve or sore muscles and you don't know why, TW Mamba. Just them looking at a spot on your body for more than 5 seconds straight is enough to cause discomfort and pain.

Its been my home for 50 years so i'm a little bias but I think you'll love it. Randall high is part of the canyon ISD. Its a great school. Here are some things to check out:
Palo Duro canyon
Tacos garcia restaurant
The Big Texan
Caprock canyons State park
Canadian River Cafe
Panhand Plains Historical Museum
Amarillo College Art Center
Polk St Party next Saturday night August 14th
Hummers is fun
That funny smell you will experience wafting in from the southwest soon is that of the many feed lots between Amarillo and Hereford!
Check out the Tascosa High vs. Amarillo High football game in October.
WTAMU football is pretty fun.
Celias Cocina on 6th street. Yea we have a 6th street too! Lots of good resraunts with live music and antique stores.

I hope you enjoy Amarillo!! Send me a PM if you need any help around town!

We have landed in Amarillo, still in boxes but should be out of those by this friday.
Thanks all for the advice.

Any more info is very much appreciated.

One thing for sure, the wife, kids, and I are all alone in a strange place. So we are trying to soak this all in and adjust.

The thing I like best about the Panhandle, other than its stark kind of beauty, is the people. Fine folks, they are.

For 200,000 people Amarillo seems to have it all. In Texas and close to the mountains. I don't understand why more peole live in Lubbock. Tech?

If I lived up there I would want to be due south near or on the lake or northwest out in the hills.

I saw it was only 82 for a high in Amarillo on Saturday and almost cried. Hey it was finally under 100 in Austin so I guess that's progress.

So two months here, and its 33 friggin degrees this morning.

I keep being told by the neighbors that the next 60 days are some of the best weather. So time will tell. It has been wet up here too.

Lessons learned in first 60 days here: #1 Customer Service is a strange concept that is not a big part of business up here. # 2 if you like steaks and burgers you will not starve. #3 I miss Austin Tex Mex. #4 I like the grocery store, you buy the groceries and they actually carry them out to your car. #5 Amarillo cops like their radar guns.

And a beautiful 75 degrees on a gorgeous monday afternoon two days removed from the 33 degrees. Welcome to the Pqanhandle!!!!

I have made the scenic drive from Lubbock to Amarillo and vice versa.
