Am I Being Too Optimistic?

Anyone who knows me will tell you I’m more pessimistic than most when it comes to Texas football. It’s hard not to be after the last 10+ years. But despite this loss, I feel better than I have in years. For several reasons…

After all he’s been through, Sark is a man on a mission.

All the “team junk/drama” from last year seems to be gone and after Saturday, they know what they’re capable of.

With several freshmen and a hobbled 2nd string QB, this team could have, and should have beaten the #1 team in the country. (With a healthy Ewers, I think we win by double digits)

We had zero turnovers and zero stupid penalties.

Will we face a better O-line or D-line the rest of the year?

Our QB situation sucks but even with that… I’m thinkin we won’t lose again if they keep this up all year (against less talented teams & coaches).

I agree it was refreshing to see genuine competitive football against a very strong opponent. I felt like I got my money’s worth. My only question is whether we can keep it up.

It's up to Sark now.
We still have plenty of weapons for Card to utilize.
If Bijan needs time to heal we got RBs.
Defense is healthy.
If they continue to play like that scores will be low.
Sark needs to game plan and play call his *** off.
We ain't done yet.

the train of logic suggests we win out. But the games are played on the field. But I'm with ya.

After watching our performance on Saturday, I am more optimistic that a 9-3 or a 10-2 regular season finish is probable, but we still have a some of tough games ahead.

I will bite... yes. Unless Texas plays Aggie this year, O'Brien will easily be the worst offensive coordinator the horns will face. Until proven otherwise, this defense is very easy to gash for huge chunks of yards with QB runs (something O'brien did not realize until the 4th quarter). The offense with Ewers is special, very special. But once he is removed, it is good but nothing special. Perhaps I am more negative as I felt really really good after the OU game last year and the fall back down to earth really really hurt and it was something I did not expect. I wrote on another thread and I will write again, I hope to join the bandwagon on October 23. I also hope there is very little space on the wagon at this date.

I think our QB injuries have a significant impact. They change up their game plan on both sides if Wright is in, and we don't know how the players perform in the new game plan.

We're better than I thought, but not with Wright in. No offense to him, just not the same level of ability.

If Wright needs to do that to beat UTSA, we will NOT be just fine.

UTSA is a solid mid-major program, and I am a huge Jeff Traylor fan, but the talent disparity at the 21 positions not labeled QB should be more than enough to insure a comfortable victory IF the talent plays hard like we saw last week.

wow, I guess you have a Chrystal ball or something.
You have never heard of a lower rated person playing well?
Shouldn't we see his inferior play before we say he is inferior?

Again, I would remind y'all to study the history of Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa - since his arrival, a minimal number of teams cover the week after playing Alabama. Couple that with our QB situation, and our coaches are going to earn those vaunted salaries this week. Traylor has his kids believing they can do it.

That’s just about how I see it.
D needs to show up again.
Sark will draw up some nifty plays.
Our skills guys are faster and better than their skills guys.

We need 4 good TD drives and that should be it in terms of necessity for the offense.

There are good signs, but I'm also a little leery of getting to far out on the limb.

I need to rewatch the game, but before we start calling this defense the '85 Bears, let's remember how much of our success was helped by stupid/crowd-aided penalties by Alabama. When they were dialed in and focused and stayed ahead of the chains, they converted third downs and moved up and down the field. Part of that is just that they're REALLY good, but there were still plenty of plays to be had, particularly in the middle of the field.

The big thing to me was that other than that one big run which we completely screwed up, the defense didn't give up big plays, they tackled pretty well in space, they got to the ball - they did a lot of things better than I thought they did last year. But I'm not convinced that we can win Big XII games without putting 30 or more on the board every time out.

The offense still hasn't run the ball the way they need to run it - and as the o-line improves over the year, I think that will come around. I'm worried it won't be there quickly enough, because for the next four weeks we'll be seeing 9 and 10 guys within five yards of the line of scrimmage. If Wright can make people pay, we'll be fine. If he can't, or if it's an immobile Card running the offense, I'm not sure we make it out of this stretch without a loss or even two.

Injuries aren't excuses, but I do think we'd better keep our expectations this month reasonable. This season was always going to be about what this team looks like in November, and I'm very optimistic that no one is going to want a peace of this team by the end of the year. The path to get there may not always be pleasant, though.

I have been determined not to get over confident. I thought 9-3 was conservative with QE. 11-1 is possible. When he comes back will be critical, & how healthy he is then. We just have to lean on our defense and run game until then. Use Rojo a lot out of the wild cat. Only opponent that can beat us if we do that without QE is OU. Maybe Quinn is back by then? Surely he’ll be back by OSU.

'We're better than I thought, but not with Wright in. No offense to him, just not the same level of ability.'

Seems we had a QB lead the HORNS to many wins several years ago that came from a very small school.....I believe that turned out very well for the Texas program, the fans and for Colt. I believe he is still playing! Then little brother came in and performed pretty well.

Wright is likely better than an injured Card. Maybe not against Bama on Saturday unprepared, but against UTSA with a week’s preparation.

No.
After a sluggish start we won by 21 points.
We were picked to win by 12.5
I think we were a little flat after an emotional Bama game.
And UTSA is no pushover.
