"Run 53 Veer Pass," Royal said. The play called for Peschel to run a deep flag pattern. Mike Campbell, Royal's valued friend and defensive coordinator, heard the call and jumped back.

"Darrell," he said. "There's only one receiver out, and he's deep. It's all or nothing."

"Fifty-three Veer Pass," Royal repeated.

Campbell turned and gathered his defense around him.

"Get ready," he said. "We're fixing to give them the ball at our own 43, and we've got to stop them one more time."

Street turned as he headed on to the field, and walked back toward Royal.

"Coach, are you sure that's the play you want?" he asked. Emphatically, Royal told him that it was.

Man, caught the last 15 minutes. Recording the replay later.

Freaking Domers. Damn ********.

The Freddie Steinmark material...very emotional.

Look forward to seeing the whole thing.

Allsome. :hookem2:

I'm in a different time zone, it aired a 5PM my time. I'm set to watch it at the 8:30 show time. It'll bring back memories since I went to the '70 Cotton Bowl game. HOOK 'EM!! :hookem::bevo::texasflag:

Great program!

Met my expectations. Featured interviews with Worster, Koy, Peschel, Cotton, McKay, Mitchell, Wiegand, Atessis, Tom Campbell and DKR.

Would liked to have seen a few other players from that team interviewed.

Sadly most of the coaches have passed away as have I counted 11 players... Freddie, Street, Lester, Brooks, Ploetz, Cobb... to name a few.

I was fortunate to attend a handful of games that season: Navy, ou, SMU, TCU, and ND

TEXANNE is one of the few fans I have met that was in FayetteNam on Dec. 5th for the game vs. Arky... she should post here about her memories of that game.

Tommy Asaff!!

Asaff was a 3rd or 4th string RB who got a fair amount of playing time due to big leads the Horns had late in several games. Seems like Tech, Navy, TCU (69-7) and aggy. Frequently fans would call out his name to be put in. He ran well and didnt disappoint.

Watched the show. Great presentation! Really good discussion about Freddie. Nixon taking the plaque back to DC, and now, no one has seen it since. And the draft lottery. The discussion of how arrogant ND was before and during the game was dead on. Their fans, as I recall, thought they would waltz into the Cotton Bowl and walk away with a lopsided victory. They were fairly crappy during game too. Good show. Will watch again. HOOK ‘EM!!

My cousin played football, etc. with Tommy Assaf at Marshall High........played against Slick Street. There was another guy from Marshall that played a role in that game........Ronnie Hammers...........starting guard for the Piggies

Aside from the Freddie story, I found the segment about the aggy game pretty humorous. I didn't know they tried to copy our wishbone and then beat us using it. Idiots, even back then.

While watching it I realized the 69 team was the one that really defined and launched the Texas program. Also was the team that showed on national level what it meant to be a Texan and an American. I'm with Campbell - some intervention was going on.

The entire team had the "it" factor instead of just Street. And that was what Royal looked for. People could see that from New York to California. I wasn't a fan then, but remembered this team was really different. The "it" factor has always been an American thing, that Americans believe give us an edge but owned and defined in this State since the Alamo. The wishbone was a cool American invention that was also part of american ingenuity.

After watching, I think the country and Nixon needed Texas to win to give them hope during the Vietnam war era. Btw-His halftime assessment was dead on, that guy knew football.

I had 50Yd line seats with two nuns sitting behind me. I think they were ND administration people. Seats were about two rows below the portal. When ND scored the first TD they popped a bottle of champagne. Loud! Cork shot straight up. A cop standing in the gate portal came and escorted them out. Pitched two nuns. Gotta love the DPD

DVRd it to watch today. Very well done. The section on Fred Steinmark was very moving - hard to keep a dry eye. I didn't realize that so many of those folks are no longer with us until they ran the list at the end.

I was back in Austin 7 years ago for a cheerleader reunion and a couple of us heard that most of the '69 team were signing autographs at the CO-OP....there they were on the back patio....all sitting at a table...Happy Feller, Billy Dale, the Campbells, Donnie Wiggington...etc....all of them....two of ladies that went with me were cheerleaders in '69 and the conversations we had with all of them was one for the ages....all knew the same people and there was plenty of catching up on where people were and how they were doing...like the banter in a very small town....to be shaking the hand of Tim Campbell that intercepted the pass that sealed the '69 Arkansas game was incredible....I knew their Dad, but had never met either of them.

The lasting memory that will stay with me forever is the moment that the CO-OP blasted "THE EYES of TEXAS".....every single one of the guys stopped immediately and got to their feet and hook'ed their horns and sang.....utter respect for their school that they brought so much to.....

Also love the part where Tom Campbell talks about his brother giving the finger to a Priest, an asst coach and Ara after all the trash talking they were doing.........rekindled my hatred of Thiesman and everything Notre Dame.

we'd have three more National Championships if not for ND....

Enjoyed the program thoroughly.

Bob McKay has quite the sense of humor. On Slick going 42 yds for a td on that "scramble", McKay missed his block allowing a hog to flush him from the pocket. McKay said he let the defender run by him so Street couldn't throw another interception. I laughed so hard I woke the grand baby. That... Was funny as hell.

I was at the cotton bowl for the nd game and the one thing I recall as a 14 yo was ND was twice our size. They made mention of it in the clip, that visual has never left me....our guys looked skinny in comparison so I can see why they took us lightly. The next year when they beat us their fans were poor winners. Very classless.

I LMAO at McKay....it was true, though....ha!

ND was a team that recruited anyone they wanted back then. Another interview with our team and about half of them said they had hoped to be selected by Notre Dame, but came to Texas.

Those were some really special years. A great group of guys to be our heroes...I became a TEXAS fan during this stretch and never looked back. Memories of a lifetime....hopefully, some more to come for this season upcoming.....

I know LB Scott Henderson was one of those, i read somewhere he once said he grew up wanting to play at ND but they didn't offer and UT did, so he became a Horn. I think Freddie was Catholic and also grew up wanting to play for ND.

Great program.
I always loved that '69 Oline. I especially enjoyed listening to Forrest Wiegand, you could tell he was 100% dog.
