Alecia Injures Knee in Tournament (update 01/06)

I keep checking the StLtoday site and, while it says there was an update at 7:31, nothing in the story has changed. She hasn't tweeted anything since before last night's game.

They just posted a story about an hour ago. They said she was on crutches during the game tonight and had an MRI on her knee early during the day, but that the results were not available. She was voted the mvp of the tournament. She said it felt good to win the award.

Thanks for the update. I came across some of the rumors her father referred to in the article but didn't want to post anything until confirmed. Guardedly good news for Alecia considering some of the doomsday stuff I'd read. Has to be tough though, her high school is ranked #1 among Missouri large schools and have never won a championship. Odds were also good she would've made the McD and Jordan Brand games.

Sounds like there is a chance she could be back this season and that she might be done to have time to rehab the knee for next fall.
“They really don't know what it is right now,” said Larry Sutton, Alecia's father. “What they do know is that it is not the ACL, though. They say her ACL is still intact. There have been a bunch of rumors and people have just run with them.”
…Larry Sutton said his family remains cautious.

“If they say it's any type of LCL or PCL, I will, most likely, pull her for the year,” Larry Sutton said.

The full results of a planned MRI early next week aren't expected back until next Thursday at the earliest.

Awful news for Alecia first and foremost, but also for our ball handling next season if she is not back to full strength. We have Brooke, but will no longer have Celina nor Empress.

this is a colossal bummer and a blow to our future. She's a star. I don't know if she can rehabilitate the knee and even play next year. And it may always lose her a step, though she'll still be good. Anyway, suddenly we need another guard. Higgs and Aerial aren't point guard material.

With the advances in sports medicine over the last decade, specifically ACL injuries, it seems that most athletes are able to make complete recoveries. The biggest obstacles seem to be remaining positive during the extended rehab, learning to trust the knee again and likelihood of reinjury. She has a fellow signee that has already been through this and seems to have come back as good as ever in Jada Underwood. Hopefully Alecia can lean on and learn from Jada's experience.

Cheer up Hornfans!

Although nobody wanted to see this happen, the gloom and doom is unwarranted. Having had ACL surgery on both knees, it is amazing how well reconstructive surgery restores full capability.

Is there a recovery period requiring dedicated therapy? Of course. Does the patient need time to regain confidence in the knee when back on the court? Of course. Can I guarantee this will all turn out for the best? Of course. (No, just kidding.)

However, if something like this had to happen, the timing was actually pretty good. Assuming Alecia will be on campus for summer sessions, don't be surprised to see her on the court.
