Alaska Fishing Lodges

Looking at a late July or early August '09 trip to Alaska. Our primary objective is fishing, and secondary to that would be hiking and wildlife viewing.

Our crew, as it were, will consist of my dad and his brother (both in their 70's, but VERY active and capable), my brother (40) me (42) and my two sons (12 &11).

We will want to fish for trout, salmon and halibut (so we'll obviously need to be near the coast).

My dad did a trip about 15 years ago to Lake Iliamna area, but I can't find out if the lodge (Point Adventure) is still in business.

We're not diehard fly fisherman, but a couple of us may give it a try. So a Lodge friendly to non-fly fishing is a must. Also, the two boys are "well-traveled", but they are still kids, so we'll need a place that will accept them.

Does anyone have any first-hand knowledge of any lodges that fit the above criteria?

Mirr, I don't know of any specific lodges but are you trying to fish for lake trout or steelhead? Also, that late in the year you might only be able to fish (successfully) for halibut. The salmon run early summer (June and July) mostly. By late summer, they're still out there but they're getting pretty played out.

If you're not going for lake trout, I'd say look at Homer and Seward. Stay in town but hire a boat and fish with them. There's other stuff to do in/around both towns (Seward more so) that would give you guys stuff to do besides fish for a day or so. Plus, Homer has a small brew house.

I have a friend that goes up there every spring/summer season to captain a boat. I'll ask him.
