Fifty years ago, college football officiating crews did not spend thirty minutes during each game reviewing plays and deciding whether or not to uphold or reverse calls made in real-time, the whiz-bang way they went down. And for fifty years, Alabama fans with elephant-like memories still believe Texas QB Alan Lowry was out of bounds on the winning touchdown run on New Year's Day.

I was in the 2nd grade in '72 and that game was one of my first Longhorn football memories. Aside from all the Alabama fans, I remember my cousin, who was an aggy fan (and therefore perpetual bearer of sour grapes) insisting after the game that Lowry was out of bounds. Rosey was also one of my first Longhorn football heroes - in fact, when my Dad told me that we had signed someone who would be better (some chap named Earl...), I thought he was crazy...

It was the ‘72 season, but the ‘73 Cotton Bowl. 10-1 that year marred only by. 0-27 lost to the Sooners.

yeah, he was in all the way.

Could not believe this post. As a photographer for UT I shot this game. I was set up about 30 feet from the point where Lowry made his cut. When he made his cut the side of his cleats lifted up about two inches and never touched the sideline chalk. It happened so quick I didn’t realize what had happened. The play was on top of me so fast I was unable to get a shot. It wasn’t until I saw replays later that I realized what an historic play it was. One great sports moment in time.
