Air Purifiers

I am going to be buying a couple for my house and was amazed at how many there are to chose from, the specifics of what each can do, the many things to consider. Stuff like, how much does the infrared bulb cost to replace and how often, same with the filters. Warranty, lots of stuff. So I have been doing some reading.

Have any of you done the same and what did you come up with and what resources would you suggest to me to read and then ponder upon? I also found a great site that has been very helpful and informative.
The Link

Full of info.

Also, what is the scoop on the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze. Results really seem mixed and the ones I have seen seem to be cheaply built. Do they really work? They have many positives about them if they do.

I am prob. getting one that incenerates stuff for the bedroom as well as a small HEPA purifier (double kill for sleeping area)., a tiny one for the bathroom (mildew) and kitchen, and a bigger one for the main rooms.

Hope my link helps some either get started or compare and thanks for any links or info/feedback. I think these items will help my allergies a whole bunch esp. regarding dust, dust mites and mold in the air like Austin has a lot of. I like the burners that help out w/ viruses and bacteria. They don't have filters to have to change.

I just had my heating and cooling system replaced and had them put a UV light in my coil area. It is on all the time and cuts down on mildew and when the system runs it pushes out clean smelling air. It cost my $200 from the A/C guys, but I know you can go to Home Depot and buy one that you can fit into your unit for around $100. I think it is worth the cost.

I've known people who had the Ionic Breeze and loved it. They clear up the air quite well. I know that they are expensive, but you can go to the sharper image website and buy them refurbished at a significant reduction. I think that you can get them cheap at the sharper image store on ebay too.

Ty wolf. I too have heard mostly good things about the ionic breeze machines. But have heard some bad like they don't really work. Wish I could try it out a couple of months. Anybody have a couple I could borrow for a couple months?

I've heard that, although the Ionic Breeze cuts way down on the mold and other crap in your air, it actually increases the amount of ozone in your air, which can be bad for you.

Wouldn't it be easier to just shave your dog?

My BIL who is in the HVAC biz says they are ********. I am fairly certain he is a moron, though. We have a ranch house that is so dusty that everyone gets the sneezels when they sleep in it and I'd like to change that. Keep the testimonials coming.

I have heard the Ionic Breeze doesn't work as well as advertised.
A coworker had a filtration system installed in their AC/ Duct system because of a child with respiratory problems. I think they spent $500+ but were very happy with it.

I really don't think the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze is very good. You're better off getting something with a HEPA filter.

Nick, def. check out the website I provided. You will find yourself spending a goodly amount of time there. Good stuff. I also plan on stopping by the Allergy Air and More store to hear what they are talking about. I am sure there are forums online too, gotta find those.

This is a purchase I want to be very sure about. So yeah, keep 'em coming.

Check Consumer Reports before you buy anything. They tested all of the room units and said they do nothing but increase ozone. They said the built in whole house units work somewhat. They got sued by Sharper Image and Consumer Reports won. Don't shoot the messinger, those are just the facts about what CR said.

I've had a Sharper Image Ionic Breeze for a few years and it seems to work OK, but I think there's definitely better "silent" purifiers out there. I saw one at Brookstone that was based on the same principle but also had a flywheel fan mounted in the base that generated a lot of airflow (the biggest knock against the IB), yet was still almost silent. And the collection grid was kind of like these cylinders that ran the length of the unit, giving the collection area many times the surface area of the IB.

I was also looking at a Sharper Image catalog recently and I thought it was interesting that the Ionic Breeze section had two FULL pages of nothing but letters written to them by customers talking about how great it is and how it helped them. The problem is that when it comes to the effectiveness of a product like this, anecdotal evidence pales in comparison to actual scientific data, which there were none of whatsoever anywhere in the catalog. Especially for a product like this where the so much potential for placebo/psychosomatic effects.

Some of these letters were ridiculous too. One guy said he had some girl coming over who was allergic to dogs. So he turned on the Ionic Breeze and she had no problems after that. Another guy set some food on fire, and he said he turned on the IB and the smell went away almost instantly. In my experience the IB does capture a lot of dust and it's great to never have to replace the filters, but there's no way in hell it has the capabilities that some of these letters claimed (yet they published the letters anyway).

As far as the ozone issue, I've always heard that it produces ozone levels WELL below government approved limits when used as designed, and there's no evidence of health risks from such low levels. Of course I'm sure if you put it in a closet with the door closed or some **** like that you could eventually reach harmful levels, but as long as you don't go overboard I doubt that's an issue. .

I would say in general Sharper Image makes inferior products. That said, I have had an Ionic Breeze GP for about a year now. It works ok. I only got it because they were practically giving them away on ebay. Its better than nothing I guess.

Oh, I don't know about that. I clean the filter about once a week. I always remove a significant amount of dust.

Like I said, it works ok. But I am sure there are better products out there.
