Aggy makes pool too short, screws over athletes

Nice!

I understand the measurements tell us that they were off by a little bit.

Isnt a meter around 39.9 inches? Thus .03 meters would mean the pool was short by about 1.2 INCHES?

unless i just went aggy and did my math wrong, thats a huge difference in time from the record to her time. At most that 1 inch would have been covered in another .02 or .03 of a second.

She still would have obliterated the old record by almost half a second. I am surprised that the governing body wouldn't go ahead extrapolate her time and maybe even add a tenth of a second on it as a "penalty", then sanction the new time as the new record time.

I'm with KC. The size of the error noted in the article doesn't match up with the discrepancy in the time.

It's going to be nearly impossible to extrapolate though. Arguably, you at your fastest in the first 25 meters and are at your slowest near the end. I don't think you can assume that its a constant speed.

They did the same thing with their basketball court at their Galveston campus. They built a shiny, brand new athletic complex circa 1994 and the Rockets would use it for practices in the playoffs during their championship run. Apparently, it is about a foot too short.

what is there to extrapolate, we are talking about 1 INCH less than its supposed to be.

The article was saying this was a 50 meter race that the record was set in, and my understanding is the pool is 50 meters long (well, 49.97 to be exact

). Thus, no turnarounds, or extra laps to have that inch accumulate.

So this swimmer destroys the world record by more than .4 of a second, and the pool is short 1 freaking inch and its not going to count?

Thats ridiculous, her hand would have touched the side of the wall a milisecond later than it actually did. We arent talking about the pool being 2 feet short or something, its less than 1.5 inches short. Like I said, add a tenth of a second penalty to the official time, and let the record stand.
