Aggies discuss Austin dining options....

I've never understood why people have an orgasm over Freebirds. It's good, but I wouldn't drive out of my way to get it.

For the most part, looks like a bunch of aggies who haven't found their way around town yet.

I really like Freebirds, especially compared to Chipotle. Anyplace that will put that much fatty goodness in a tortilla is fine by me.

Lately I've been going for the combo at Taqueria la Tapatia...about the same size, but with rice and beans on the side for $3.70. Who cares if it's mystery meat?

i'm pretty sure that i could eat at gueros day in and day out.

I eat at freebirds and 2 things happen. about 3 hours later I have to spend a significant amount of time in the bathroom and then i'm burping freebirds for the next 2 days.

But you still go back, don't you Scally?
I really like Freebirds. I don't go out of my way to go there, but I don't go out of my way to go anywhere really.

Dude, the Austin Ag club is meeting today for lunch at Furr's Cafeteria.

Man, the jokes just write themselves.

The Taqueria I've been going to is a little east of Woodward on Ben White. There's also one west of 35, close to Manchaca.

I think they're all over town, if neither of those is close to you.

actually freebirds originated in santa barbara, CA. but i have a feeling that the one in cali doesn't have quite the popularity or following that the ones in Texas do.

i remember going to freebirds when there was only one in northgate. my senior year, they opened up the one off Texas Ave. and that was awesome b/c one of my friends lived in an apartment off holleman and Texas so it was almost next door.

as for freebirds, i used to always get one of their hot sauces until i tried the chicken with bbq sauce and i have been hooked ever since. regular chicken on cayeane tortilla with bbq sauce. hard to beat.

they have a knock-off in houston and SA, mission and habanero's, respectively. but none can top the bird...

Freebird's is damn good, but it's not an original idea. No other restaurant is a "knock-off" of Freebird's. Chipotle's, Freebird's, and the like are all knock-offs of the Mission-style burrito that originated in San Francisco's Mission district.

I used to love Guero's in the early 90's when it was in the old Taco Bell dive off E. Oltorf. When they moved to S. Congress, the food and the folks changed. It's now one of the "trendy" places and lost the appear of cheap beer and margaritas on Friday afternoons.

As for Freebirds ... I'll drive a long way for one of those mothers. There are better foods in life, but that much tasty steak goodness is just hard to resist.

did one of those guys really ask about Double Daves?!?!

WTF?

Thats like asking if there are any Pizza Huts in town.

I almost get the Freebird thing (even though there are about 1000 better places to eat in Austin than that) but I don't get looking foward to a Double Daves at all.

Its a freaking strip mall pizza joint on every corner.

Freebirds kicks ***. I'm not single handedly keeping them in business, but I'm trying.

The Tanquera on Guadalupe isn't bad either.

The world would be a darker place without Tex-Mex and Chinese food.
