Afternoon in DC

I have an afternoon open in DC next week, staying near the White House. Never been before, and I know one afternoon / evening is too short to see everything i'd like, but looking for suggestions.

Right now I'm planning on walking the monuments and taking a bunch of pictures. Any good local greasy spoons?

Tune Inn and Hawk and Dove on Capitol Hill. They are next to each other. Hopefully Savvy will chime-in, she know's where all the burger and beer specials are located.

You might want to see some of the Smithsonian during the afternoon, and walk to the monuments later when the museums are closed. I love the Museum of American History, but then I was a history teacher! You won't have time to see more than a little of one or two, so check online and pick what interests you most.

Definitely the Tune Inn. Of the Smithsonian buildings, I'd say the Aerospace Museum. I think the Museum of History is still closed.

Orleans House is near subway in Reston - pretty good food, and of nostalgic.

In the basement of the Capitol, north end entrance, at teh base of the stairs is a room with the greatest quote in the entire Capitol. Get a camera, take a picture, send to all your friends to have framed.

what everyone else said.

if you have time, try a night tour of the city via the Tourmobile. I think it's still $30 and it starts at 7pm from Union Station.

If you go to Tune Inn, play someWillie Nelson and Johnny Cash. If a really drunk looking douche tries to play a bunch of Yes songs on the digital jukebox, pay extra credits to "make mine first." It's money well spent.
