Good rebound game for the Horns after losing to Tenn last week. Horns did what they were supposed to do: dominate the game, winning 109-48 and outrebound Sam Houston State 50-25. It was the first time this season that the Horns broke the century mark. That happens when the team shoots 62% from the field and 60% from BTA. The only negative: 57.1% from the FT line (12-20), quite a bit down from their FT average coming into the game: 69.5%. Gotta have something to work on.
Excellent passing with only three players out of 14 not making at least one assist. Horns ended up with 25 assists on 44 made FGs. Only Brianna was in foul trouble, ending up with 4 in 13 minutes. No one else had more than 2. Chas, Kelsey and Celina had zero fouls in playing at least 14 minutes. Horns played a lot of pressure and man to man so that was quite impressive. Six players were in double digit scoring with 12 of 14 scoring.
Imani led the way with 10 rebounds with two others with six while all players grabbed at least one rebound.
I did like that they did not let off when ahead, something that has happened before. The main rotation of 10 is very tough with multiple players able to score and rebound while playing stellar defense. Nekia got her first action of the season and has two more games to acclimate herself to college play. It was easy to see her ballhandling abilities on two particular plays: a pretty pass in traffic to Nneka for a layup and when she grabbed the defensive rebound and took it all the way for a layup attempt-the only thing lacking on that was the make. She is going to be tough matchup. Brianna was solid all around. The main difference when she subs in for Empress is experience. Those two are probably our two best perimeter defenders. And both can shoot. Kelsey is going to be difficult to keep off the Big 12 All Frosh team if she continues to play like she has.
Happy to see a couple of VB players at the Lone Star room after the game. Of course, everyone noticed Sara Hattis. I am pretty sure that freshman setter Chloe Collins was with her but I won’t swear to that. Nice to see the support. Sara got a big ovation when Coach Aston mentioned she was in the crowd.
Stopped by to watch the team do a clinic for the little kids at Cooley. Nice to watch the team having fun teaching the group. Lots of kids and their parents. Great way to build a fan base. Kudos to whoever thought this up and to the team and staff for taking the time to do it a short time after a game.
FYI, a replay of the game will be on the LHN at 8 pm.
Next game is Friday night, Dec. 20.
