Afraid of static

So, I have what seems to be a ridiculous amount of static in my apartment. Everytime I come back, I either get a mild shock when I touch my doorknob or sparks fly when I insert my key. Once inside, mild tingles here and there when I touch metal objects. Should I be worried about this? There is gas in the apartment...

If this happened yesterday, I wonder if it was something in the air THAT day.

I was working with my daughter on her basketball game and I swear if barely touched each other we were getting electrocuted.

It hurt.....one of the most intense static I have felt in a long time.

I wonder if it was something in the air that day?

Where do you live? Here in Colorado static electricity is a way of life from late fall to late spring as the humidity is super low during that time of year. Has the humidity been particularly low lately? Do you have high shag carpet?

I fuckin' hate static. I'll never forget one of my high school science teachers telling us to touch glass before touching a door knob to discharge our bodies, that **** doesn't work.

my dog also hates this time of the year. he always gets zapped in the nose when I try to pet him, or when he approaches me to nudge me to let him outside to use the restroom.

I ask about the carpet because, in my experience, the higher the pile/shag, the more static electricity it helps create. Only thing I've found that helps is to touch door knobs and other places where you get shocked with your shirt sleeve before touching w/ bare skin. That works great for doorknobs, unfortunately, it doesn't work so well with light switches...
