Too often, imo, Americans attempt to employ their world-view to other countries. We don't understand the complexities and relationships in tribes, clans, ethnic divisions, Pashtun, non-Pashtun, Northern Alliance, mujihadeen, Taliban, etc..

A simplstic view as in "we give them money, they should be on our side" often doesn't play out like one would think. For starters, we often don't know who "they" really are.

We understand them completely, the memo's are simply ignored and it would upset our millitary industrial complex and regardless of our knowledge of them, they can be bribed and this is what we do. We pay them off to pretend to be on our side and they cooperate for the most part on many things. This is probably nothing more than a public statement for them to get more money from us and support.

I understand the complexities of international cultures and alliances. My beef is with Karzai himself. We have bent over backwards, spilled our own blood and sent countless amounts of foreign aid to prop up him and his government. Not to mention that fact that he was a member of the anti-communist Mujahideen meaning our assistance to him goes back decades. Bastard should not bite the hand that feeds him.
