Advice Re: Re-painting a car

I've got a 2002 Honda Accord in excellent shape EXCEPT that the sun has done a real number on it. Until now, it's been parked outdoors with little protection and the paint job looks like crap. I now have a garage to park it and am wondering about the process of car re-painting. About how much would this run for a full car repainting and would it be as good as new?

Also, it's black which I never really wanted. Is it possible to paint a black car silver or another color and have it look OK? It's got about 85,000 miles and has been a great car so I'd like to make it a bit more presentable because I intend on keeping it.

Any advice for leads in Austin to get this type of work done well? Thanks.

Last time I checked into this for my pickup I was quoted $1800.00 to repaint it red and $2800.00 to change the color to Burnt Orange.

Be careful, they might not paint every interior surface. It's possible you will be able to see black inside the door jams, trunk, or hood. Door jams would probably be most noticable, though.

I would not paint it a different color because of the door jambs.

Have you tried doing a clay bar/polisher run down on it? I've seen some paint that looked rally bad get shined up to look brand new. If you don't have the time/know how/inclination to do it yourself, find a detail shop. It's at least worth a shot to try before going straight to painting.

Also, be very careful in your paint shop selection. Cheap paint jobs are cheap for a reason.

It may not be the paint.. A lot of peeling from th sun is actual;ly the clear coat. I would get someone to figure out what is peeling. If it is the clear coat than that is easier to fix. You prep the paint and then apply a new clear coat

Any recommended shops in Austin? My wife's car has a small area on the rear bumper that is fading and a spot on one of the rearview mirrors where the paint is simply coming off.
