I remember that VW ad (was it from National Lampoon or MAD magazine?). It was pretty outrageous for its time.

Ah, good ol' Pan Am. Used to love how they named all their planes, usually featuring the word "Clipper" in some way -- "Clipper Monarch of the Skies", "Clipper Ocean Perl", etc. JetBlue actually continues this tradition today, by naming each of their planes with some variation of the word "blue" in the name, including a lot of cheesy puns -- "I Only Have Eyes for Blue" for example.

BTW, Youtube has a lot of clips of old TV commercials. One of my favorites is this Continental Airlines ad from 1977. It's laugh out loud funny.
