Adopting a Family for X-Mas ...

So our medium sized tailgate crew has been able to collect a good sum of money this football season in the form of donations. In the spirit of the holidays we're looking to adopt a family, or deliver presents to a hospital, organization, etc.

We haven't ironed out exactly what we want to do, but we'd like to focus on children impacted by cancer, since many in our tailgate have lost someone due to the disease.

Any ideas on where/how we can start finding places we could possibly help? We don't have tons of cash, but probably $500 or so.

Thanks for any help you can provide. This should be fun.

I would look at the cancer care centers for children and find out which one seems to be least supported by the public over the holidays. I would find out how many kids they generally have and talk to the staff about what I could do to enrich these childrens lives during an obviously horrible time in their lives.

God Bless You and everyone else that thinks of others.

You don't have to look farther than Dell Children's at Brackenridge. Really, in any community, cancer devastates the children and their families, emotionally, and financially. Other great foundation is Make-A-Wish.

If you don't find the right Cancer Children's group you like, you could go to one of the homeless shelters - though, I''m not familiar with Austin. The ones in Dallas do an "Adopt a Family" at Christmas that are very successful.

Hook'em!!!

I'd try contacting a social worker at Dell Children's. Or the Ronald McDonald house.

It's not cancer, but you might consider contacting Austin State School or Austin State Hospital. The mentally ill children and young adults who live there rarely get nice, new things, and do not have families to turn to during the holidays.

Another suggestion for something if the Cancer idea does not pan out (which is awesome and bravo to you and your crew) is Safeplace for battered women and kids. They are scared and many have nowhere to turn. So some warm food and holiday goods would go a long way.

Big ups to you guys.

I work at a children's hospital in Corpus; we have donations like that all the time and they make a huge impact on the families involved... If you're in austin you should just call Dell's and ask for their oncology department or ask to speak to the Social Worker in the oncology department... usually they have a hand in stuff like that...
