Adding a Hard Drive

I know nothing about doing this. Should I just get someone to do it for me or is it pretty simple. Also if anyone knows of any good deals out there for hard drives and RAM, your assitance will be greatly appreciated.

if you are just adding for extra storage, and plan to keep your OS on the current HD, all you have to do is connect the power, set the HD jumpers to 'slave' mode and then hook up HD data cable to it from the middle or 'slave' connector.

There are thousands of how to's on the net; tom's hardware comes first to mind as one with pictures and decent instruction.

NewEgg.com has great deals. I bought a 100GB harddrive this year and had it going in no time.

if its just for extra space: i.e. music or video, its a breeze. If you are making a big leap and want to put the OS on it, it can be a challenge. If its the former, do it yourself. If its the later find the local nerd to help.

I bought a superquiet seagate 200GB hd w/ the larger buffer from newegg for less than $100- and I don't think it was on sale.

Really easy to install- set master/ slave correctly-- or if you have cable-select- make sure you have the jumper set in the right position/ correct cable ends plugged in. Should be very simple to do-- just follow the many tutorials- and make sure the pc is turned off/ unplugged while you're inside the case.

It's a little trickier to 'clone' your old drive- if you want the new one to be your boot drive-- but still not terribly difficult.

i got an 80GB on ebay for around $40. check that out, but just be sure to check the feedback rating of the sller and make sure it is listed specifically as "new in box"
