Adding a hard drive to PC

I currently have a desktop at home that has a 30 MB hard drive. I'd like to add more storage, mostly for music and picture files.

I don't know off-hand what type of drive I have. What do you recommend as far as hard drives? How much storage capacity should I add? Do I need a new controller board, or will my existing one work? Any general thoughts/advice would be great. Thanks.

did you mean 30GB instead of MB? if the latter, you need a newer computer. otherwise you probably have a regular IDE drive and can get something like 80G for $60 or 120G for $80 at newegg.com. installation is simple.

You shouldn't need a new motherboard for an EIDE drive unless you want something like Serial ATA / RAID and your mainboard doesn't support it. Although there may be PCI SATA controllers you can get. I know they used to make those for old SCSI components.

I would recommend a Serial ATA card and hard drive; the installation is easy, and the performance is worth the extra cost, which isn't much. You can get a 7,200 RPM 120GB drive for $60 with a rebate, and a decent card for around $30...
