Acuna or Nuevo Laredo?

If I was to just say, "**** it." and head to Mexico with a chick for a weekend, which city would you suggest I head to? Where should I stay? Where should I go for booze? What else should I do while I was there? Should I not even begin to consider doing this at all? All thoughts and suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.

Never been to Laredo but Acuna is the tits. Pick up some of the local brand chips and salsa at the store. I forget the brand name (It's a name of a male) but that stuff is the best ever. The locals will know exactly what I'm talking about.

No clue where to stay. I went on a Church trip like 10 years ago.

Edit: They are Julio's chips...which I am told have expanded.

I've been to Nuevo Laredo many times in the past, but you should avoid it like the plague nowdays unless you really want some adventure. The drug gangs have been going crazy there lately, shooting cops and random people in drive bys. If you do want some some adventure, there are some great shops and restaurants there.

DO NOT GO TO NUEVO LAREDO. Apparantly, even the
Laredo locals do not go accross anymore, at least not at night.
Go to Nuevo Progresso, between Weslaco and LaFeria off
Hwy 83, but go only for the day. There are restaurants, bars, pharmacies and places to shop galore, all on one street!
Then stay at night in McAllen, Harlingen or someother nearby valley town.

We used to drive accross, park in the parking lot of restaurant "La Fogata", and then leave the car there all day, as we shopped. They have a man that watches the parking lot continuously, and works for small tips. "La Fogata" is famous for its cabrito, but I hear it is not nearly as good as it used to be.

Also try Arturo's and Garcia's for food and drink. Garcia's is atop the Canada Store, which is the best place to buy Mexican curios, etc.

Acuna, absolutely! You can drive right across very easily and with no worries. I've done it hundreds of times. Depending on what kind of chick you're taking with you, you can stay on that side at Hotel San Antonio. It's nothing fancy, but it will work. Eat at Crosby's, drink in Crosby's bar. Head over to Corona Club for more drinks and then repeat process. There are several cool places to hang out and drink and just slowly let the day turn into night. Enjoy!

i spent the summer as an intern in laredo. when i got there, i expected for people to tell me that nuevo laredo wasnt nearly as bad as the media had made it out to be. in fact, all of the locals told me the exact opposite. i was told that only about 50% of the killings were reported in the media. this was coming from people who had lived across the river for years, only moving recently when things got bad. they told me to not go there for any reason whatsoever.

since i actually am invincible, i couldnt resist and went over a few times, once at night for dinner and some drinking. i did not really feel unsafe at any point, but i did a double take when we saw three pickups of government agents drive by. each truck had about 4-5 guys in the back decked out in body armor and armed to the teeth with machine guns. i figured that if they felt they needed that much protection, things must really be bad.

one thing i did notice was that, each time i crossed the river, ours was the only group of people going over there for tourist reasons. everyone else going south was an actual mexican resident commuting to or from work in laredo. the tourist industry has totally bottomed out in nuevo laredo because of the crime wave over the last few years. most of the good restaurants have closed or established a location on the texas side. in fact, the place we ate dinner at was pretty crappy. there is now a bar district, for the first time, in laredo. people just do not go across anymore, and because of that the whole experience has changed.

ive never been to acuna, but if the crime isnt as bad, im sure it is better than nuevo laredo. earl77 mentioned nuevo progresso and i can vouch for that. i had a fantastic and cheap dinner there with a large group. we took in the street shopping and knocked back some beers. like he said, everything is all on one small street, maybe 5 blocks deep.

It's been over a year since I've been, but I've been over a hundred times growing up. As stated above there is one small strip of bars in Acuna. You should go eat at Manuel's. It's a small restaurant on top of a liquor store on the left side on the strip. The food is CHEAP and some of the best mexican food you'll ever have. Far better than Crosby's. If you want to go somewhere nicer then go to Lando's which is across the street. Hangout at Crosby's and Corona Club. Like I said it's been awhile so I can't tell you what other bars to go to as the clientele may have changed. Across the street from Crosby's is a place called the Tequila Club which we always called the "Cocaine Club". Let's say they were always very accomodating if you're interested. They let you go upstairs where it's empty so there's no chance of being interrupted.

As far as hotels I guess the Hotel San Antonio would do. I've always just stayed in Del Rio. Overall there's not to see or do but party. If that's what you and your girl are up for then get after it. Otherwise I would plan on doing something in San Antonio or the hill country on Friday night. Then head for the border on Saturday or vice versa. Just remember money can get you out of just about anything. Have fun.

Acuna is where you want to take a lady. Crosby's to eat, drink. Corona Club to drink/party and if you want a change go to Up and Down. Hotel de San Antonio is a good place to stay and where we always stay. Hunters in Boys town has been redone and is very nice now.

Nuevo Laredo is not as bad as people say it is. I have been several times during hunting season this year.

what Beef said. Ma Crosby's can be hit or miss I feel but it is always a great place to start in Acuna. The Hotel San Antonio is only about 5 years old and was a god send. we used to stay in some major shiet holes or just stay in hotels in Del Rio.
