ACC moves tourney over Confederate flag dispute

It doesn't bother me that some black people hate the Confederate flag.
It doesn't bother me that some white people like the Confederate flag.
It pisses the hell out of me that the NAACP is the race organization that colleges and businesses will do anything for.

"In the end, given the conference’s commitment to diversity, equality and human rights, our institutions have determined that this change should be made.” - Wouldn't it be diverse and equal to give a conference tournament to those who like the Confederate flag once in a while?

South Carolina is free to do things that it knows alienates and pisses a certain segment of the population off. The ACC is free to have it's conference tournament where it sees fit.

Sounds like both sides are free to do what they want. +1 for freedom.

You are correct that the state of South Carolina is free to piss off a certain segment of the population. You are correct that the ACC is free to locate its conference tournaments anywhere.

If the NAACP actually wanted to fulfill its mission statement of “equality of rights of all persons”, they would say something like this:

“You know what; we don’t like the Confederate flag because to us it represents slavery of black people. But if to you it represents Southern pride, then that’s okay too. We want your right to be equal to our right. If however, you fly the Confederate flag to represent enslavement of black people, then we will protest.”

That’s not what the NAACP does. They go more this route:

“The Confederate flag represents slavery. Remove it or we protest. END OF STORY.”

This leads me to the problem. The NAACP is not health for equality and therefore the ACC should not bow to their demands.

So the NCAAP is not free to do what it likes as a group?

You'd be more likely to garner sympathy if you said "South Carolina already caved to the NCAAP by removing the flag and placing it elsewhere on the ground. Then the NCAAP got angrier when it turned out to be more prominent on the grounds."

I guess like the NCAAP some people just can't be happy.

It's amazing to me that people are only tolerant of things they don't find offensive. It seems like everyone is able to exercise their freedoms just fine.

i hate the confederate flag. i think it is stupid. it's not 'southern pride'.. that flag has one meaning and one meaning only.

with that said, the NAACP wants equal rights for everyone. well that includes the haters unfortunately.

if i had my way, no hateful organization could have rights.

they need to make up their mind. everytime i hear about the naacp i cringe. they do so much good behind the doors, but when they poke out their heads it is to ***** about something. the whole michael vick thing was the tipping point for me on my respect towards them.

I think what people fail to understand is that in the eyes of South Carolinians the Confederate flag has absolutely nothing to do with their hatred of black people!

No. But it's a tribute to a heritage that enslaved black people. I'm still shocked that no one has raised the issue of the Confederate States of America flag flying in the South endzone of Memorial Stadium.

As a young man I never understood the feelings dredged up by the Confederate battle flag, nor did I care about how it could possibly offend anyone. However, as I've grown older and more cynical, I believe that if it was about Southern heritage, honoring the cause, and paying homage to those that sacrificed their lives for the cause, then the flag UT flies in the South endzone would suffice. After all, it is THE flag of the Confederate States of America. I just find it odd, and rather revealing as to the true meaning behind the act of flying a flag in tribute of Southern heritage, that they choose to the battle flag. Just my rambling thoughts.

Saint, the big difference about the south endzone of DKR is 1) it isnt the Stars and Bars battle flag which the Klan et al have since adopted, it is the national flag of the Confederacy which isnt as easily identified with the hate group aspects and 2) it is part of a group of six flags and thus isnt given any "prominence".

I have split feelings on this, I understand the argument that the flag is associated with a lot of truly reprehensible things but it also is linked with the south and its heritage. A lot of young men died fighting under it who never owned slaves and who were fighting for their homes and friends. Read about many prominent southern military leaders and they were anti slavery and fighting because it was their home not to defend an institution they oppossed.

Now all of that said, we live in a free country, South Carolina is free to fly the flag, the ACC is free to move its tourney and that is a good thing.

The Civil war was concluded over 140 years ago. It seems to me that people who can't get over it really have major problems. jmo.

Not to get this thread too far off topic, but the list of Southern generals personally oppossed to slavery begins at the top with Robert E. Lee.

and continues with Longstreet, Stonewall Jackson, and many more. Dont care to take the time to look up links for all of them but they are there. Just google each name and slavery. The addage my country right or wrong didnt start with supporters of the Vietnam war.

It is also impossible not to acknowledge that this became an issue over the civil rights movement and many are hypocritical about the issue claiming heritage when it was really just a middle finger to the NAACP and the civil rights movement. No one has a corner on the market of purity on this issue.

As I said before I think the great thing about being a free country is that South Carolina can fly the flag and the ACC can move their tournament. Free speech and free market all in one.

Who said anything about "solitary"

PFD, You are either dishonest or not that bright if you dont think slavery and white southeners "right" to use black people as free slave labor was not the overiding issue on why the south seceded from the United States.

Please enlighten the rest of us on why the South seceded from the United States. Im sure slavery had nothing to do with it.

If you want to glorify those sort of people that is absolutley your right, but quit trying to act like the confederacy was on the right side of history.

I chuckle how you try to portray these Southern generals as if they were abolitionists just because they did not have the means to own their own slaves.

We're only wasting bandwith here with our little two-man debate, none of which is going to change either of our minds, so I'll let this go here, with the following brief retorts.
