Academy Award -- Best Song

For "once" they got it right. I'm sure there have been some decent winners over the past couple of decades, but I can't recall any off the top of my head. The main song from "Once" is such a legitmately original piece of music and deviates so much from the standard Oscar schlock that it's a wonder it even got nominated.

I had vowed to turn the telecast off if one of the three songs from Enchanted had won. I was very pleasantly surprised when they not only won but allowed Marketa to come back out for her thank yous.

I loved the film and 'Falling Slowly' is a beautiful song. Well-deserved Oscar. Didn't want to see yet another Disney film win the award (and was Enchanted really deserving of 3 song nods?). I was mildly shocked that Randy Newman wasn't nominated since he seems to be a shoe-in every single year (see the OP's comment about the standard schlock).

I think this makes 3 songs over the past 20 years or so that I can remember winning the Oscar (Springsteen's 'Streets of Philadelphia' and Eminems 'Lose Yourself'). All 3 played integral parts in their respective films yet also stand alone as well-crafted music.

I agree that Into the Wild/Vedder got hosed. Great album and it should have been recognized.

That said, I too was glad to see Falling Slowly win and it would have been a travesty if that ******** from Enchanted had won. Once was an excellent movie and the music was top notch.

Vedder didn't really write a song for the movie, he wrote a score. Best song nominees are generally a focal point at some point in the film or it's at least a recurring song throughout the film. Nothing from Into the Wild really qualified.

even though i wanted this song to win, i sure was amazed watching that 11-year old girl belt out that song from August Rush. That little girl is going to make tons of money someday soon.

I bet this was the first time in Oscar history that Gaelic was spoken. “Go raibh míle mile maith agat” which means May you have a thousand thousand kindnesses.

Great song, great movie, and they seem like genuine people. I have been listening to The Frames catalog since this movie came out.
