? about land line phone companies

A friend of mine is new to town and from France. She is going for a Ph.D in Economics. She wants to get a phone in her apartment but SBC won't do it unless she has a Social Security number...duh guys, she is from Europe.

I told her to contact Grande as she lives in an area that Grande covers. But her apartments may not be serviced by them.

So the question is what other options or companies can you guys recommend to her based on your experiences. All she needs is a local line and she will use calling cards to call back to Paris or elsewhere so as to cut back costs. Thanks folks.

Uhhh, most of the International students I know have SS numbers. They pay taxes too. Of course there are always those prepay phone companies,, that cater to deadbeats who don't kow what a budget, or saving is. But they cost like $25 for basic line.
