AAS Article on Mack's recruiting

We are soooooo fortunate to have Mack Brown. Honesty and integrity are his middle names, and bless his ever lovin’ heart, he can do it all. Recruit, coach, teach, drive the bus, and sweep out the stadium after games. He can even win the big ones! I thought coach Royal could walk on water (and I still do), but Mack is right there beside him.

Is he just guessing on Jeffcoat? I havent heard anything that would make me say I think he will be ours.

Either way, if we get at least 2 of those guys, this is a top 5 class...maybe if we only get 1.

I remember back in the 80's/90's checking the DMN on recruiting (usually it would start printing the Top 100 State/Nation recruits and their school choices in the fall). Back then, Texas was always far, far behind. Other schools would have commits, Texas may or not be in consideration.

This is a breath of fresh air and has paid huge dividends!

It makes a big difference when you DON'T alienate the state's high school coaches, and run off, or turn off, the school's biggest supporters and former coaches and athletes. Mack gets it...Mackovic never did. It's the difference between being a wine snob or a beer enthusiast.

I share everyone's disdain for Mackovic, but it's also undeniably true that he did a much better job of recruiting than Fred Akers did in his later years, and definitely a much better job than David McWilliams ever did.

That said, it took someone of Mack's talent and makeup to not just turn our recruiting around, but make it into the monster it is today.

All the previous points notwithstanding, the fact remains that MB has won only ONE conference championship in 11 years, while Stoops has won SIX in 10 years. And OU is Stoops' first head coaching gig and he's winning these championships largely with TEXAS players.

As good as he is otherwise, this kinda takes some of the bloom off MB's accomplishments at UT.

mackovic may not have been the best fit here, but before you trash his ability to recruit, remember the following names:

blake brockermeyer
dan neil
priest holmes
ricky williams
mike adams
bryant westbrook
chris carter
casey hampton
shaun rogers
cedric woodard
tony brackens
leonard davis

i'm forgetting a few, i'm sure, but those are just the guys that played in the NFL. let's not forget:

major applewhite
james brown
lovell pinkney
kwame cavil
wane mcgarity
aaron humphrey
taje allen
chris akins
pat fitzgerald

that's just off the top of my head. there were a number of good, quality OL under mackovic and several solid receivers as well. LBs, not so much, but mack hasn't had a ton of luck at that position group either, save derrick johnson and the current group of rising seniors. it looks like the 2010 group will be nice. mackovic wasn't good at playing grabass with the privileged donors (edit: and i don't know if i can forgive him for letting darnell pretend to coach defense here), but he was a darn good recruiter...and he actually messed around and pulled some OOS studs that we can't seem to lure with any consistency. i'm glad mack is here now, but i appreciate what mackovic did for the program. he set the table for our current run. without the absolute studs he left behind, there's no way mack wins 9 games in 98, 99, and quite possibly, 2000.

Last Southwest Conference Champions!
First Big 12 Champions!

Mackovic drove me crazy as he did many others, but he did have his redeeming qualities.

Mack Brown is just a quality individual who works his tail off. Here's to continuing the recent trend of stomping zero-U!

Another thing about MacII that people fail to remember is that he really helped to integrate a racially divided team.

As I remember the story the first time he walked into a team meeting as coach of Texas he took one look and saw that the room was divided whites on one side and black players on the other. He turned around and walked back out and instructed his assistants to fix this. When he came back in, the room was integrated with whites and blacks sitting together.

It may sound like a little team but I think it started the healing process between Texas and some of the inner-city schools that considered UT the most racist place on the earth.

BTW I also remember in the mid-80's looking at the Texas top 100 and we weren't even getting the consideration That aggsy is getting right now.

No one wanted to play for Texas at the end of the Akers era.

On top of being a great recruiter and a pretty darn good coach.
He also proudly accepts the responsibility of being the face of the program and accepts the all the PR duties that come with it. ( a lot of coaches hate doing this) He does this with class and intergrity. How many times have we heard whispers of a dirty program, questionable antics or slimy recruiting tactics- probably none, unless from some jealous aggy or hateful sooner.

I hope that when he finishes his coaching career he stays onboard as our AD and retires a longhorn.
