AA Report...Whaley

Sounds like Whaley has issues being a RB in the spread.

This seems to support the popular conclusion that Mack has designs on him for the defense(te?) and is gunning for seastrunk next year.

Which leads me to ask the question: why no offer for Michael?

Honestly, A&M and the Horns should trade RB's.

Other schools backed off Michael as well. No one seems to know why this 5 star RB wasn't more highly sought after. Very strange.

Everytime somebody brings up Whaley's running style, size, or apparent problems in a spread offense, I keep thinking yeah, but he's probably the best pure running back we've recruited in several years, in terms of size and speed. Maybe we move to a somewhat different offense that lets Whaley do his thing before deciding to turn him into a tight end, H-Back, or whatever?

Also reports that Gilbert and Whaley were the two top guys period at any position on Mack's board. I trust he'll figure it out.

So VY should have played the Chris-to-Roy pitch-and-catch offense? No adjustment necessary.

fishy,
What the hell do you think Greg Davis is really good at? Think about our offense with Major, Kwame (tunnel screen, anybody), and that bunch. Then think about what we did once Simms was starting. Then remember what we did with Vince and now Colt.

Personally, I like having an OC that can adjust his playcalling to the talent on the team, rather than a Rich Rodriguez type who will simply let his team go down the toilet with his precious system rather than adjust it when his players don't have the natural talent to run the scheme. But if you prefer the opposite, well, I suppose that's your choice.

I hope Whaley redshirts next year with Gilbert. I feel he will remain at rb and he also gives us the strong back we need to pick up da blitz. Gotta protect GG....

personally i hope he stays at RB, unless he is really that good on D. I think we need a big back in the future. He might not be an every down back and might only get 10-15 carries in a game but when we are up in the 4th and need to drain the clock, he can pound and get yards and move the chains. We seem to be a RB by committee even in the future, aka USC. Hope we get 2 studs next year and i think all can be very good for us.

Good point earlier about GD. It is something he does well.

Size is not an issue. There are many RBs past and present that are as big or bigger than CW. I assume some of you would put Eddie George, Dickerson, and Brandon Jacobs to the D side. Question is, does he have the talent to be a good RB? Can he move the pile? Can he make players miss?

HM was not a good RB, not bc of size but bc he was not good at that position.

We really need to get 2 of the big 3 RBs next year, they will both play a lot of us in the future.

Someone help me out here. What are the issues? I've seen tape, and my assumptions are he runs straight up, ala Eric Dickerson, but without Dickerson speed or moves. Doesn't lower shoulders to get tough yards (Henry Melton) or ???

What exactly is Whaley playing in this game? The only time I saw him was when he was trotting off the field after a punt or field goal.

Whaley for the TD on a screen. 40+ yards. Boom.

Terrrific straight line speed, especially for a guy that large.

At the risk of being criticized for boiling things down to 2 players, what can some of you say about Gilbert's skills in offenses other than the spread? Would he likely be as effective running a pro set, with Whaley at RB?

Just when everyone catches on and starts running the spread sounds like the perfect time to move on to something else, if personnel allows.

In reply to jimmyjazz.

I think Gilbert has the smarts and the talent to run any system; either the spread or a conventional two RB.
Whaley looks like the big power back we are used to. I would rate him as similar to Cedric. He tends to run a little upright but he has amazing strength. He and Cody would be a holy terror in a two back set.

Like all the players, I bet Whaley will get to play where he wants to play, which I guess would be RB. Whether he turns out to be like Cedric Benson or Henry Melton will probably, determine where he ultimately ends up. But from watching that Army AA game, he looks like he could turn out to be like either one with very satisfactory results.

Even if he can't run in the spread you still need some one to run out the clock in the 4th quarter and you need runningbacks that can pass block

This kid and Cody are the big backs many of us have been praying for for years.

SEriously, I don't understand what some of you are thinking when you talk about moving him to another position. If the kid wants to be a RB, then let him be one, esp after what I saw int eh AA game.

As for NOT adjusting your scheme for your personnel...that's one of the stupidest posts I've seen on this site. Ever.

Hopefully he can be a great back here at Texas. That is where he will get his first chance. I also hope that Cody comes back in great shape and pushes for a lot more playing time. If he could make a lean 240 he would sew up the big back spot.

Any coaching staff silly enough to insist on running a set offense, despite personnel, is like a carpenter trying to drive a square peg into a round hole. Luckily, Mack and Davis have shown the ability to adapt to the personnel on hand, and if Whaley's as good as he seems to be, they'll adapt again. As for what offense Gilbert can run, I suspect the answer's just about any offense short of the single wing.

Whaley seems to be in the mold of Chris Wells. You know, the guy who just blasted us for huge gains. CW is not a "shifty" running back by any means but he is money when you need to move the ball and run the clock.

BTW, did he get hurt late? I know they were behind and needed to conserve clock but I couldn't believe how much Tressel ignored him late in the game.
