i have a flight that has already been paid for but i will not be able to use. anyone know what the policy is for american airlines? do i lose a portion of the amount spent or what?

Entirely depends on what type of ticket you bought. If I remember correctly, the worst case is about $100 change fee plus the difference in cost of any ticket you change to. From there it goes to no change fee, but non-refundable. The most expensive tickets are fully refundable.

i purchased the non-refundable. then maybe 100.00 plus diff. in ticket price on next trip.

You also have to use it within a year.
