A place to donate children's books?

I have a bunch of old children's books (age range probably 6 yrs to 12 yrs appropriate) to donate. Any recommendation of a place to donate 'em? They're good hardbacks, mostly -- lots of nature **** -- Cousteau, that sort of stuff. I want to (a) make sure they are used, and not just thrown away, and (b) wouldn't mind the charitable donation reciept.

I've thought of just giving them to an elementary school library, but don't know if they take donations like that.

Advice?

I know the Texas Children's Hospital takes them, so I am sure Austin would too, also, the public libraries might be interested but check out local school libraries, they don't have much of a budget and lose tons of books ever year.
