A nice NIT run would have been more fun

Just saying, in retrospect. For the past couple of weeks, we crossed our fingers for this...bowing out in the first game of the NCAA tourney and tacking one more "L" on our record?! A nice NIT run would have been more enjoyable

Who's to say there would have been a nice run? This team has played to the level of its opponents all year and easily could have had a first round exit in the NIT too.

Disagree. I have yet to meet anyone who gives a tinker's damn about the NIT. Though it pains me to see us suck in the NCAAs, I'd rather be one-and-done in the Big Dance than go far in the NIT.

Like several other games this year, Texas had a great opportunity to beat Cincinnati, but couldn't get it done. There is no reason to believe it would be different in the NIT. This has been a somewhat painful season.

"There is no reason to believe it would be different in the NIT."

********. We would have been a #1 or #2 seed in the NIT playing at home in front of a crowd that didn't abhor us. Our opponent would have been from the likes of Stony Brook, Savannah State, or Illinois State. We would have slaughtered whoever we played in the first round, and likely the second round as well (teams like Akron, Marshall, and UMass).

Instead, we came out scared against an opponent who has been downright great since February. I have no doubt that the NIT could have fueled us to a promising 2013.

Based upon what I saw this season, your opinion sounds like dream fodder to me Horns11. I did get a good laugh though. Especially the part about slaughtering anyone.

UT-Arlington was one of the 8-seeds. We beat them by 18 earlier this year. Do you disagree that we'd beat the **** out of them a second time? At home, instead of Nashville?

It's comical to compare our performance against good-to-great teams with bottom seeds in the NIT. Cincy has been one of the most feared teams in the country, and we held our own against them in the second half. Anyone who thinks we'd play down to Cleveland State is kidding themselves about the quality of competition.

One thing you can't knock the 2012 team for is beating the teams we were supposed to beat. Sure, we couldn't pull it off against teams better than us.

The loss to OK State and the bad game against Tech aren't indicative of "the norm" that we had throughout the year. We had some really close games against teams like MU and BU as well. And if you're implying that UTA is as good as OK State and Tech, I guess agree to disagree.

I'll take a one-and-done NCAA appearance than winning the NIT.

I might be in the minority here, but there's no way I want an NIT Championship banner hanging in the rafters. It's a honor - a constant reminder that you weren't one of the Top 68 teams that year. I know we won the NIT back in the 70's with Johnnie Moore - our only appearance in that tourney - but back then the NCAA was considerably smaller (24 teams? 18?) so it meant a little more.

We got a bit of a bad draw too. What if we had gotten San Diego St., they would have been better match ups for us I believe.

We still had a tie score late in the second half and possession of the ball. We started as bad as you can start and still was at this stage. Then we made mistakes as much or more than Cincy made plays to win.

We deserved to be in the Tourney and that is where this team and any team for that matter wanted to be not the NIT. Why argue over something that was decided on the court against a good Iowa State team that was like a home game for them in Kansas City?

Horn, every game mentioned was perfectly indicative of "the norm". That is why I think the NCAA tourney was appropriate but also why I think they could have lost to any team.

We got an excellent draw. Probably the worst 6, 3, & 2 in the tourney. We just choked in the final 2 minutes like we did in both KU games, the Mizzou game in Austin, and both Baylor games, and the KSU game in Manhattan. We can play with anyone in the country on most nights. We haven't learned how to win, and next year I would expect us to make great strides here, and be in top 15.

"If you don't see a whole lotta promise in '13 with only modest big men additions (assuming JCB stays), then I don't know what to tell you."

I argued this on the other thread, but whatever.

"Ok St., Temple & NC St called and said you're full of ****."

We beat Temple, and NC State is in the Sweet 16.

"We got an excellent draw. Probably the worst 6, 3, & 2 in the tourney."

Really? The #6 that beat Marquette, Louisville, and Cuse over the last month? They're miles ahead of the other 6-seeds, including a midmajor who played no one all year and two western teams that bowed out immediately to #11s. Stick to critiquing libs on the other board.

We need some quality bigs, some more consistant offensive firepower, and depth.

With Ridley, players not going pro that shouldn't, and the rest of a good recruiting class showing up we should be much better. No more long scoring droughts with someone besides Brown that can score the basketball and not to timid to do so.

Don't know what I was thinking with Temple. NC St. is not good. And winning a couple of games in the tourney is not going to convince me otherwise. Two #15 seeds beat teams they wouldn't beat again in 9 more matchups.

You have an argument with SDSU. Apparently you didn't watch UNLV or MSU much this year. I'm not really impressed with the Big East this year relative to prior years (same with ACC and hence my underwhelming feelings toward NC St and FSU). I think the clear class of the conf is Syracuse obviously and Marquette. Now Cincy beat Marquette in the last week of the regular season and edged Cuse in their tourney and has been playing good ball, but both of these teams were clearly better than Cincy. In fact Marquette almost dropped 100 on Cincy a few weeks before Cincy beat them at home, and they squeaked by Cuse. They were a formidable opponent but one we matched up well with. I would have much rather faced them over MSU or UNLV. And if we hadn't spotted them a 16-2 lead early I think my good matchup feeling would have played out nicely.

The comment was more geared toward the 3s and 2s. Except for maybe Gtown and Duke, there were not worse 3s and 2s, respectively, in the tourney. For instance we could have been matched up against Baylor or Marquette and then Mizzou or KU, and we would have been far worse off. So yeah, I think it's clear we got a hell of a draw.

Regarding bigs, Holmes will be a player for us. Obviously we are lacking depth now big time, and while Bond is a nice player with an upside limited to Gary Johnson, he is not the talent Holmes is. And I really like McClellan and Lewis who are both very athletic, but Lewis clearly needs to work on his shooting and shot selection.

Rex, I agree with you about the rest of the draw, was just referring to the Cincy game. Did watch those teams, UNLV looked like world beaters early then went into a slide. FSU is a Jeckle and Hyde team for sure.

No, arguement here wish we could have slipped by Cincy and had a go at them. I do think another big body like Wang could have made the difference.

Marquette is a very athletic team that could give anybody trouble. MSU is well MSU, you wonder how they just beat you sometimes, especially at Tourney time. Of course Izzo is special like Coach K is to Duke. They are the cream of the cream in coaching.

Could we play with a MSU, of course their style lends itself to closer games, most which they win.

I was talking about Murray St.

We had a great run of consecutive Sweet 16s. We have only reached one post-Durant because we have had mass turnover in most years beginning in '07. I may be behind the twitterers in my up to date knowledge of the two guys in question but I'd be surprised, mildly, if JCB 's feelers indicate to him it's n his best interests to go, and I'd be shocked if Kabongo leaves. My point is I think our turnover wave is about to stop. So be mad about tourney performances in '10 and '11 (though I think we got ****** by seeding and refs in '11), but this year, knowing what we had, is not the year to be bitching about Barnes not reaching a Sweet 16.

Cincy was a tough physical match up for us. Wang isn't great, but he can play some tough D.

It appears they are too physical for an athletic, but schizo FSU team, made them play their style of basketball and beat them at it.

Murray St. another quick athletic team with 3 point shooters, they just met an even better athletic team in Marquette.

Speaking of depth, I wonder if Ricky Seals Jones has any desire to come over to the Drum after football season. He has been a really good basketball player in high school, averaging over 30 points a game. Would Brown allow it, has this been done at Texas, can't remember anybody doing it. Wouldn't cost a scholly either. Unllikely I guess, but just a thought.

in front of a crowd for the NIT? A bit of an over statement. Maybe 5,000 tops...and very quite and polite.
