A new look at Clarence Thomas

I think Clarence has always gotten a bad rap, because he didn't fit the mold that some thought he should. His story could be an inspiration.

I do have reservations about how out front his wife is in her view/business. I understand that she has a right to do her thing. But she should understand the position it could put her husband in, and respect the position he holds.

Nobody ever really cared about Thomas' qualifications. His biggest offense was being a social conservative taking over for a social liberal. He shifted the Court's balance. His second biggest offense was being black. If qualifications mattered, they wouldn't hate Scalia and wouldn't have rejected Bork, both of whom had superb on-paper qualifications.

Having said that, one criticism I have of the US and Texas Supreme Courts is that most of the justices have nominal if any real courtroom experience. I'd like to see justices on the court who have actually practiced law under the rules and precedents handed down by higher courts.

I remember the criticism of Thomas very differently. Allegations of hypocrisy were front and center, given that he clearly benefited from AA while eschewing its efficacy in leveling the playing field. It was also President Bush's cynical use of race that made both men objects of scorn. Had Thomas been white with an equally unremarkable vitae, he never would have been mentioned for the Court. His selection was solely about race, which would have been okay had Bush not pretended it was only about qualifications.

Is that the same as asking if I like the fact that people are given preferential treatment because of their race? You do know this happens, don't you?

Directly, my positions is consistent with those who supported Thomas' elevation to the Court. They appeared to have been okay with a nominally qualified person whose blackness trumped his qualifications.
That Thomas agrees with you is in no way surprising.

Perhaps about the same time the relevance of her liking women becomes apparent.

Ag, Justice Kagan, like most nominees who are elevated to the Court are judged :well qualified by the ABA.

President Bush said that Thomas was the "best qualified [nominee] at this time."[5] The American Bar Association's (ABA) rating for Judge Thomas was split between "qualified" and "not qualified."

Conservatives who love to yell and scream about the abomination that is AA in their minds, seem to have little problem embracing it when it suits their political ends. Justice Thomas is clearly proof of that.
