A new '08 PG possibility -- Update: Taylor to KU

Tyshawn Taylor attends the same school as 2010 commitment Tristan Thompson, and '09 target Dominique Cheeks. He's a 6'2 point guard who signed with Marquette in the early period in November after considering Kansas, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech. He's taken official visits to Marquette, GT, and VT. That means he has two left.

He has already received his LOI release from Marquette, which he asked for because Tom Crean left there to take the job at Indiana.

According to this Scout.com premium article ---The Link --- he's whittling it down between Texas, Florida, and Kansas as to who will get his remaining two visits. Obviously that could change, but this late in the process I doubt it does.

I realize many folks --- including me --- are wondering where they're going to get the scholarship spots from, and the answer is, I have no idea. They have JD Lewis's former spot available for sure, but that's the only one we know about for certain.

I would assume Tyshawn Taylor's spot is incumbent upon DJ's decision regarding the draft, although as we're all aware, a player can declare for the draft and still return to the team.

J'Covan is supposed to sign on Monday, and I fully expect him to. He still has work to do to get qualified, but it's all doable, and I expect him to be on campus as soon as the NCAA Clearinghouse gives the all clear indication, which would probably either happen by the second summer session (my hope) or before school started.

Jeff Taylor is also supposed to make his announcement on Monday, and Devin Ebanks is coming in for an official visit next weekend. I think that's it at this point for the '08 class, but Taylor didn't pop up on the radar until very recently, so who knows?

What I will say is that if there's room, I'd love to get this kid. I don't think he's on the level of TJ or DJ, but he will add some length to the PG position, and he's certainly a high enough caliber talent that Texas could win at a high level with him.

Honestly, I can't quite believe we're this late into the '08 recruiting period and things are still this much up in the air.

Is it a possibility, but one never mentioned, that scholarships are taken from other guys or that other guys start paying their own way because they have family support? I know it's considered somewhat disloyal, but when people say "I don't know where they'd get the room...." is that what they mean?

any chance this is a j'covan back up plan?

also, how does this kid compare with jb?

also, muchas gracias for the updates, they are always appreciated.

Kansas just signed Appleton, the JC PG. They will still have Collins, and Chalmers is not a lock to leave (although I imagine he will declare). KU doesn't seem like the spot for him, IMO...

That does seem like a real number crunch, depending on some of the kids' decisions. However I have thought we were going to be squeezed in the past, but things have always worked out. The coaches must have a good feel for roster moves that we can't see.

Also, I would like to echo the Hippie and give a thanks for the update.

Bob thanks for the nod. Barnes has run off at least one player. I believe the kids last name was Willliams and he was about the same time as Darren Kelly. He transferred to a school in LA. As I remember it he was involved in some kind of serious felony after he left. It was pretty clear that Barnes told the guy to leave.

There was another kid who Barnes ran off as well. He was one of my residents when I was an R.A. circa, '98 or '99. Kid was from the east coast I want to say New York area, but it could've been D.C. He never played as I think he was a transfer student (and no I'm not thinking of the Stephen the Aussie from Auburn and who to Wyoming)

Edit: Just talked to my brother he said his name was Vaughn Hunter

Now that I think about it he was there my 2nd year as an R.A. which was Fall '98, during Barnes initial season. He came in with William Clay and if I remember correctly Chris Owens transferred in that year as well.
Oh and he definitely made it to campus unless you're allowed to live in Jester East without being registered.

4RH, I don't even remember him playing.
<short interlude to look in media guide>
It doesn't look like he did... at least, he didn't letter.

So, it could be that he was a non-qualifier who had to sit out his first year...

I think the B12 rules at the time allowed one NQ in football and one in another sport... but that is strictly from memory.

... an all time favorite Horn. I think he was one of the guys who gave credibility to Barnes in that part of the country.

Then again, maybe it's just that I've liked Barnes since I saw him coach at George Mason (yes, that George Mason), Providence, and Clemson.

No, it was a reference to Tyshawn Taylor. (Edit --- whoops! Should have been a reference to Jeff Taylor. I was simply wrong)

We're just missing each other on the two threads, lol.

J'Covan supposedly signed today. Best to wait until it's confirmed the LOI is in Austin, though.

yeah...Hunter never played at UT. he was here for a year and then left.

I remember Penders referring to him as "the best player in the NYC area" that year. I'm pretty sure he ended up playing at a small school in NY or VT.

Lawrence Williams had a sweet stroke. he played really well when we played UCONN in CT. I think we won that game. but yeah...he left after a year (he was a JUCO) and I think he was rolled on some sort of felonious crime in LA.

The timing of Barnes replacing Penders couldn't have been better. I fully believe Penders would've continued to ignore instate talent for NYC, and other places. Barnes came in just in time to realize the benefits of Texas kids being allowed by the UIL to play AAU.

Who knows what kind of relationship Penders had with the coaches in the state, or how hard he wanted to work at it?

He is recruiting the same way at UH that he did at UT... plugging gaps with JUCOs (no crime, but he does it every year), and grabbing a bounce-back transfer, but second-level in-state players.

He did a terrific job at UT, but he never was going to take the program to the top level.

Kansas has a recruiting class now of 7 players.
Their roster for 2007-2008 was 17 players and that didn't include Chapman's brother.
I see too many fish in the pond here.
